The City of Soldotna has an opening for a full-time Winter Seasonal Streets & Maintenance Operator/Worker.

Under the direct supervision of the Streets & Maintenance Department Manager, this seasonal position performs tasks related to the operation and maintenance of the City including; streets, storm drainage systems, parks, public buildings, the Soldotna Municipal Airport, sewer collection system, water supply storage and distribution systems, and other miscellaneous work as assigned. Work may be assigned on a shift basis. The position involves contact with the supervisor, fellow employees, contractors, and the public.
Licenses or Certificates: Alaska Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B with airbrake and tanker validation and current medical examiners certification) for operation of vehicles and heavy equipment. Employee must have and maintain a good driving record.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT: The work environment involves frequent exposure to extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Temperatures range from minus 55 degrees to plus 110 degrees. Employee may be exposed to significant levels of noise and vibration. Working in and around chemicals such as petroleum products, and salt is common. At times, employee may be required to work in confined spaces. Safety equipment will be provided to protect employee from hazards. Employee may be directed to operate heavy equipment for up to 14 hours per day.
EXAMPLES OF PHYSICAL TASKS: Lifting up to 70lbs: digging soil and snow, equipment parts, ladders, hoses, etc.; Reaching/handling (above shoulders at times): Stored equipment, equipment controls, power tools; Pushing/Pulling: moving pumps, debris, furniture, wheelbarrows, hoses, electrical wires, conduit, etc.; Climbing: Ladders, equipment, manholes (may be wearing safety gear); Standing, walking/carrying: while working with varies pieces of equipment and general equipment operation and labor requirements. Crouching/Bending: working on vehicles, equipment, storm drains, brush and tree cutting. Twisting while backing vehicles, equipment, and trailers, etc.; Sitting for long periods of time while operating equipment, including heavy equipment; Hand/Finger manipulation: Operation radios, computers, hand tools, etc.; Visual, Hearing, Smell: to alert employee to noxious and toxic hazards and safety concerns; Equipment Operation: Capability to efficiently operate a motor vehicle and/or heavy equipment up to 14 hours a day for several consecutive days in a row (such as snow removal).

- Perform regular and recurring tasks related to the operation and maintenance of City streets, storm drainage systems, public buildings, the Soldotna Municipal Airport, parks, sewer collection systems, and the water supply, storage, and distribution system. This includes the efficient and continual operation of a variety of equipment such as graders, front-end loaders, dump trucks, pick-up trucks, backhoe, vactor truck, snow blowers, and sweepers, etc.
- Perform light maintenance on all equipment operated.
- Perform manual labor tasks such as thawing storm drain inlets and culverts, digging holes, building shelving, painting, etc.
- Be available on-call to perform unscheduled or emergency needs of the City.
- Performs other activities as directed by the Maintenance Department Manager.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers.
- Ability to communicate pertinent information in writing).
- General knowledge of the operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, building and grounds maintenance. General knowledge of carpentry, basic electrical, plumbing and mechanical systems, particularly as they relate to buildings.
- General knowledge of trade safety and special requirement needs such as the use of personal protective equipment and confined space entry requirements.
- Ability to operate hand tools and hand power equipment.
- Ability to proficiently operate light and heavy equipment and perform light maintenance on equipment.
- Ability to work back-to-back extended workdays, including the operation of heavy equipment for periods up to 14 hours in a single day.
- Ability to work safely in a variety of different situations and conditions.
- Ability to maintain required licenses without restriction (except for correctable vision).
