Job Description
Summary of positionThe Public Information Officer (PIO) for the City of Sedona Police Department serves as primary communicator between the communications unit, the Police Department, the media, and the community. This role ensures timely, accurate, and transparent information that reflects the city of Sedona’s values, promotes public trust, and supports departmental priorities. The PIO develops strategic communication plans, manages social media outreach, manages internal communications, and coordinates messaging for programs, public safety initiatives, and critical incidents. Receives general supervision from Communications and Public Affairs Manager, may take direction occasionally from Chief of Police as determined by supervisor. First candidate review will follow final approval from City Council in mid October.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities as qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Experience:
Two years working in public safety or municipal government communications. Experience in public information, media relations including social media platforms and use of digital content tools.
Training:
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, public administration, or related field.
License or Certificate:
Possession of, or ability to obtain an Arizona driver’s license within two months of hire.
Special Requirements
Due to the confidential, sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of background investigation and a polygraph exam is required.
