The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) provides nutritious food to youth ages 1-18 in low-income communities. The City of Seattle sponsors these federally funded meals and snacks to youth ages 1-18 at approximately100 locations throughout Seattle, including playgrounds, community centers, library branches, summer schools, youth clubs, cultural organizations, housing communities. Simply stated, the Summer Food Service Program’s goal is to connect youth with nutritious meals and meaningful academic/cultural activities when school is out.

This position performs food delivery duties for the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). SFSP is a United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded program that provides free meals to children and youth, 0-18 years of age, in low-income areas.

This job is a high-energy summer job that provides the opportunity to spend time outdoors and in the community while supporting a vital community resource. Ideal candidates are punctual, detail orienteered, and are able to work the full summer without scheduled day off. The job requires the ability to drive a city-issued vehicle from the Seattle School District kitchen where our meals are made to designated sites throughout the City of Seattle. Drivers need to be able to pick up the correct number of meals that need to be delivered to each site, on a designated route.  The work requires knowledge of the City of Seattle’s geography and roads and the ability to drive a motor vehicle safely on a strict time schedule. Personal contact is primarily with school district staff and staff of the Summer Food Service Program.  Interaction with site personnel and youth is also necessary.

 This position is full-time with typical work hours from 8:00-4:30 and runs from approximately 6/10/2024-8/30/2024 and candidates must be available for this entire time period. Due to the nature of the work, this is not a remote position.

  • Participate in training to learn the rules and regulations of the Summer Food Service Program prior to meal sites’ first day of operation
  • Deliver program materials such as banners and sandwich boards to sites before meal service begins.
  • Start work daily at the Seattle School District Central Kitchen (in SODO) to pick up meals to be delivered each day to various sites on a pre-assigned route.
  • Count out the correct number of meals and snacks to be and delivered to each site. Keep accurate records of meal numbers.
  • Daily delivery of breakfast and lunches to be completed by sites’ scheduled lunch service time
  • Weekly delivery of snacks and shelf stable meals
  • Answer work-provided telephone and promptly respond to site and City staff
  • Make special or urgent delivers is not on pre-assigned routes
  • May occasionally assist monitors with picking up site paperwork and delivering it to OST Coordinator as City offices.
  • Pick up daily route paperwork from SFSP office at Seattle Municipal tower and deliver to Central Kitchen. May assist in preparing route sheets and site receipts.
  • Perform other related duties of a comparable level/type as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires one year of delivery, warehousing, or general office experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time
  • Required to life packages and objects weighing approximately 50 pounds or less
  • Required to work in all types of weather
  • Comfortable driving cars for long periods of time (Note: you will be provided a City car for daily work)

 

LICENSE, CERTIFICATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Current State of Washington driver’s license or evidence of equivalent mobility.
  • Relatively clean driving record
  • Ability to pass a background check

Desired Qualifications:

  • Requires one year of delivery, warehousing, or general office experience (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class). 
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Experience with record keeping
  • Experience to work as part of a team and communicate effectively

The full salary range for this classification is $23.62 - $27.46 per hour. The pay for this position is $23.62 per hour.
