Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) is seeking an organized, detail-oriented professional to join our Project Management and Controls Division as an Assistant Project Manager. This entry-level role is a premier launchpad for a career in civil engineering and infrastructure delivery, offering the chance to support critical capital projects—from watermain replacements to essential drainage upgrades to addressing facility needs. Working alongside experienced project managers, you will gain hands-on experience in field documentation, permitting, vendor coordination, and compliance tracking.   • Attend project meetings, take notes, and follow up on action items.
  • Maintain internal schedules, trackers, and compliance documentation systems.
  • Support construction closeout’s by organizing records and ensuring documentation is complete.
  • Assist with multiple projects across SPU’s water, drainage, and wastewater portfolios.

Education:

Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or two years of college level coursework in engineering and construction technology (or a combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class).

Experience/Education Equivalency:

In lieu of an associate’s degree in an accredited program, two (2) additional years of civil engineering work experience under the supervision of a licensed engineer may be substituted.

Or: A combination of education and/or training and/or experience which provides an equivalent background required to perform the work of the class.

Licenses or Certificates: Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility.

A combination of the following qualifications would be desired, but are not a requirement.

  • Interest in building a career in project management. 
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with people from diverse professional, cultural, and socio economic backgrounds.
  • Ability to take directions from multiple stakeholders and develop a work plan.
  • Strong sense of accountability, ability to complete assigned tasks and meet deadlines.

Workplace Environment/Physical Demands:

  • This position works in an office location and may occasionally require field visits to other facilities and project sites.
  • Most work is performed in a normal City work/office environment.
  • Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.
  • May be required to lift over 50 pounds.
  • May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.

This position allows for the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule. Employees will be required to come into the office a minimum of three days per week. Individual schedules will be agreed upon by the employee and their manager.

Application Expectation:
