Job Overview
We are seeking a dynamic and detail-oriented City Clerk/Treasurer to join our municipal team. This pivotal role combines the responsibilities of managing city records, overseeing financial operations, and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards. The ideal candidate will bring a proactive approach to public service, demonstrate strong financial acumen, and possess excellent organizational skills. As a key leader within the city government, you will facilitate transparent communication between departments, elected officials, and the community while maintaining accurate financial records and supporting sound fiscal management.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive city records, including official documents, ordinances, resolutions, and meeting minutes, ensuring accessibility and compliance with legal requirements.
  • Oversee all financial activities of the city, including accounts payable and receivable, payroll processing, and cash management to ensure accuracy and timeliness.
  • Prepare and present detailed financial reports, including balance sheets, income statements, and budget analyses that support informed decision-making by city officials.
  • Conduct regular account reconciliations such as general ledger accounting, bank reconciliations, and account analysis to uphold financial integrity.
  • Manage regulatory reporting obligations in accordance with federal, state, and local standards such as GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles), IFRS (International Financial Reporting Standards), SOX (Sarbanes-Oxley Act), and other applicable frameworks.
  • Lead budgeting processes by forecasting revenues and expenditures to align with strategic goals while monitoring fiscal health through financial concepts like double entry bookkeeping and financial analysis.
  • Utilize accounting software such as QuickBooks, Sage, Xero, or similar platforms to streamline financial management tasks efficiently.

Experience

  • Proven experience in governmental accounting or public sector finance is essential; familiarity with non-profit accounting is highly desirable.
  • Demonstrated expertise in technical accounting areas including corporate accounting, regulatory reporting, GAAP compliance, and internal control procedures.
  • Strong background in cash management practices such as account reconciliation, forecasting, and account analysis to optimize municipal resources.
  • Hands-on experience with financial software systems like QuickBooks or Xero is required; familiarity with Sage is a plus.
  • Knowledge of payroll processing procedures along with general ledger reconciliation skills to ensure accurate financial records.
  • Ability to interpret complex financial concepts related to public administration while maintaining high attention to detail in all tasks.
