This position participates in the daily operation of the meter shop by assisting with the inventory, distribution, and repair of water meters and related components.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: Work is performed under the close supervision of the Water and Sewer Superintendent. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES: Guidelines include American Water Works Association guidelines and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY: The work consists of related meter installation and repair duties. Regular and repetitive tasks, processes, or operations requiring the selection and execution of actions based on defined procedures. Field obstacles contribute to the complexity of the position.
SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to install and repair water meters. Supportive, informational, recording, or other services to assist others in producing correct and effective results; minor consequences. Successful performance in this position contributes to the accuracy of water usage data.
PERSONAL CONTACTS: Regular contact within the department, periodic contact with other departments, outside agencies, and the general public. Contacts are typically with co-workers, other city employees, and members of the general public.
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, provide services, and resolve problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color. This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a stockroom, shop, or outdoors. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves. Involves regular exposure to one or more disagreeable elements (heat, fumes, cold, vibration, or wetness); frequent exposure to hazards where lost-time accidents are definitely possible.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY: None
- Distributes water meters to mechanics, work crews, and plumbers; maintains records of distributed meters.
- Prepares meters; tests meters; inputs test results in software and sends reports; conducts and maintains meter shop inventory.
- Receives and distributes fire hydrant meters; prepares meters, fittings, backflow valves, and hoses.
- Installs, repairs, and disconnects water meters.
- Repairs or replaces water shut-off valves.
- Investigate water meter leaks.
- Checks water pressure.
- Maintains parts and supply inventory.
- Process inventory orders to be submitted.
- Assists work crews in repair and maintenance duties as needed.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
