Purpose

The Site Development Inspector plays a vital role in supporting the City’s growth and infrastructure development by ensuring private construction projects comply with approved plans, city specifications, applicable codes, and environmental regulations. This position conducts field inspections of development sites, monitors utility installations, and reviews development and construction plans to verify compliance and quality standards.

Serving as a key liaison between the City, contractors, developers, and regulatory agencies such as the Georgia Environmental Protection Division (EPD), the inspector provides guidance on construction requirements and enforces erosion and sedimentation control standards. This includes issuing corrective actions or stop-work notices when necessary and maintaining detailed documentation to support enforcement and potential litigation.

This position requires strong technical knowledge, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret construction plans and specifications. Additionally, the role contributes to continuous improvement efforts by identifying recurring issues and recommending enhancements to inspection processes. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and committed to upholding the integrity and safety of the City’s development standards.

Essential Job Functions

  • Monitors active private development projects to ensure compliance with approved construction plans, engineering specifications, and city ordinances.
  • Inspects external construction work, grading, stormwater systems, water and sewer infrastructure, and road construction to confirm proper installation and quality standards.
  • Informs on-site construction supervisor of code violations; enforces erosion and sedimentation control measures as outlined in the Georgia EPD regulations and issuing corrective actions or stop-work notices when necessary.
  • Keeps inspection activity log, including detailed notes of violations, compliances, and enforcement activity.
  • Prepares documentation to support citations in preparation for litigation.
  • Reviews development and utility plans, meet with contractors and developers to clarify construction requirements, and maintain accurate records of inspections and deficiencies.
  • Reads and interprets plans, specifications, correspondence and related construction documents.
  • Coordinates with other departments and regulatory agencies to address construction-related issues and ensure timely project progression.
  • Performs emergency inspections to resolve difficult problems.
  • Contributes to process improvements by identifying recurring construction problems and recommending updates to inspection protocols and policies.
  • Prepares and maintains technical reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Requires an Associate or Technical Degree in building construction, construction technology, engineering, or related field plus one year of experience; or an equavalent combination of education and experience.

Requires additional specialized training for assigned department within one (1) year of employment.

Requires a GSWCC Level 1B Inspector - Georgia Soil and Water Conservation Commission within one (1) year of employment

Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history.

Work Location: 20 Interchange Court Work Hours: 7 am - 3:30 pm, Monday - Friday
