Examples of Duties
Summary of responsibilities include: documentation of existing systems and changes; providing support and problem resolution for an enterprise network with over 1000 devices and more than 200 remote sites; working with network engineers on projects; sharing with rotating on-call duties throughout the year; assisting in maintaining network and server connectivity in a 24 x 7 environment; assisting in the installation of new systems; perform preventive maintenance as necessary; interacting with various vendors on problem issues and RMA requests; assisting other network engineers with infrastructure support as needed; attending status and project meetings; responding promptly to service requests; and maintaining logs and status reports as required.
Assist with equipment installation, testing and system administration;
Prepare and maintain documentation;
Plan for and submit change controls;
Troubleshoot basic and advance problems, make effective diagnosis, and come up with resolutions;
Respond to service desk calls/tickets;
Interface with application development and database administration groups;
Ensure that systems are being backed up on a regular schedule;
Assist on network related projects, either alone or working with other network engineers;
Configure servers, firewalls, and other devices as necessary;
Develop and maintain effective working relationships; and
Perform Other Duties As Required And Assigned.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Associate's Degree in information technology, computer science, computer engineering, or a related field from an accredited college or university;
plus
At least three (3) years' hands on experience in a multi-platform/vendor networking environment, including extensive hands on experience with RedHat/SuSe Linux or Windows platforms.
Experience must include work demonstrating thorough knowledge of the following technologies:
TCP/IP;
Redhat or SuSe Linux;
Microsoft Server 2000/2003Firewalls;
LAN, WAN, and MAN technology;
Packet analysis – Sniffer or Ethereal;
Network Security.
Additional relevant experience may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required education. If substituting experience for education, your application must demonstrate appropriate relevant experience in order to meet the required qualifications.
Licenses and Certifications
Possession of a valid driver's license equivalent to a non-commercial, class C Maryland driver's license.
Preferred Qualifications
The following certifications:
Microsoft MCSE;
RedHat RHCE; and/or
SuSe CLA

Conditions of Employment
Persons Appointed To This Position
Work an average scheduled workweek of 34 hours, Monday through Friday;
Perform on-call rotation when they must be available on-call for production problems 24 hours per day, 7 days a week;
Perform off-hours system changes and updates;
Carry a pager and/or cell phone;
Travel within Baltimore County, and outside of the County for work and training; and
May be required to use their own vehicle to travel to remote sites for troubleshooting and repair work.
Physical and Environmental Conditions
The work of this classification is essentially sedentary, but does require periods of heavy (up to 75lbs.) lifting, and involves the use of computers and office machinery.
Medical Examination and Employment Background Investigation

Retirement
Part-time civilian employees can waive enrollment for up to sixty days, then may join or waive permanently. Newly hired employees at least 55 years of age may opt not to join the ERS.
Paid Leave
Sick Leave - Monthly sick leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. No maximum on accrual. Accrued balance can be applied toward service credit at retirement.
Vacation Leave - Monthly vacation leave earnings prorated based on the number of hours worked per week. Earnings increase after five, ten and fifteen years of service generally.
Holidays - Part-time 30 to 39 hour non-merit or non-classified employees will generally be paid for ten holidays per calendar year. Other part-time, non-merit or non-classified employees working 29 hours per week or less will receive two paid holidays per calendar year.
