What You’ll Do
The primary duties of this position may include, but are not limited to the following:
- Serve as a Field Officer processing telephone, in-person or on-scene reports of criminal incidents; and processing requests for police reports and public information, processing and serving subpoenas.
- Assume responsibility for collecting, receiving, cataloging, and the storing of physical and photographic evidence, including contraband and narcotics.
- Serve as Court Liaison by reviewing all reports for submission to the District Attorney; processing complaints for arrests, warrants, notices to appear and report reviews; procure supporting documentation, including body worn camera video.
- Provide assistance to the Traffic Safety unit.
- Serve as the Police Liaison to the San Mateo Police Activities League, manage community engagement and social media for the department and/or PAL, and facilitate special events.
- Assume responsibility for the security, operation, maintenance, and contracts of the police facility, manage volunteers and student interns, facilitates background investigations.
- Hours vary with assignments; shift, weekend and holiday work are required. Every reasonable effort shall be made to ensure that the schedule of working hours for Community Service Officers assigned to Field Operations (Patrol) will remain in the current “4/10” Four (4) (Day/Ten (10) hour format.
Who You Are
- You possess basic knowledge of the organization and functions of a municipal law enforcement agency
- You are able to interpret laws and the regulations of the City and Police Departments
- You are able to work cooperatively with others and deal tactfully with the public
- You are someone with strong analytical skills and are detail-oriented
- You possess the ability to prepare and maintain a variety of records and can communicate clearly orally and in writing
- You are able to learn and apply pertinent Federal, State and Local policies, procedures, laws, and regulations
- You possess at least 1 year of work experience requiring frequent public contact and the interpretation of complex rules and regulations preferably including some prior work experience in municipal police department
- You have a High School equivalency
- Valid California Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record is required
- Pro-active and motivated
- Proficient writing skills
- Service oriented
- Bilingual
- Interested in career in law enforcement
- One year of work experience comparable to the Community Service Officer I in the City of San Mateo
