About the Position:
As an Accounting Technician III, you will provide technical accounting support to ensure the City’s revenue streams are processed accurately and on time. Key responsibilities include cash handling, processing complex revenue collections and billings, maintaining customer and revenue records, and serving as a resource for departments across the City on revenue and billing matters.

This position works independently within established policies and procedures, balancing a high volume of detailed tasks with accuracy and sound judgment. A Day in the Life:
A typical day as an Accounting Technician III includes a blend of detailed revenue processing and collaboration with departments Citywide to support accurate and efficient financial operations. Your day may include:

  • Starting the morning by reviewing your inbox for time-sensitive revenue and billing requests and prioritizing urgent items.
  • Reviewing and processing revenue collections, ensuring proper documentation, approvals, and accurate coding.
  • Compiling daily deposits for various departments, verifying accuracy, and processing wire payments and ACH transactions.
  • Responding to customer and department inquiries related to revenue collections, NSF transactions, cash handling, and financial policies.
  • Generating billings, processing adjustments, and reconciling financial records to ensure accuracy and compliance.
  • Maintaining customer profiles, payment codes, and subsidiary ledger records within the financial system.
  • Preparing reports, summaries, and schedules for management review and audit purposes.
  • Collaborating with Finance team members to troubleshoot discrepancies and ensure timely and accurate financial operations.
  • Wrapping up the day by responding to emails, documenting updates, and ensuring all transactions are properly recorded.

Education and Experience:
High School diploma or G.E.D.; and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience in performing bookkeeping or elementary accounting, financial or statistical recordkeeping and payroll duties; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. 

College-level coursework in bookkeeping or accounting from an accredited college or university is highly desirable. 
Experience in a municipal agency is desirable.
 
Licenses, Certifications, and Equipment:
A valid California driver’s license is required.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Experience performing technical accounts payable and accounts receivable (AP/AR) functions
  • Strong understanding of AP/AR processes and workflows
  • Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices
  • Ability to learn and navigate new ERP systems effectively
  • Experience handling and reconciling large volumes of cash transactions with accuracy and accountability

Knowledge of: 
  • City policies, procedures, practices, terminology, and codes related to purchasing, payroll, and accounts payable processing
  • Basic procedures and practices for processing and recording accounts payable, payroll, and related financial transactions
  • Operations of the City’s purchasing, accounts payable, general ledger, and payroll systems
  • Bookkeeping and elementary accounting principles, including payroll processing practices and interpreting input and output data
  • Operation of computers and standard business software, including word processing and spreadsheet applications
  • Standard office practices and procedures, including filing and records management
  • Customer service practices and telephone etiquette

Skill in:
  • Operating a computer, calculator, and other standard office equipment
  • Performing calculations and reviewing fiscal, payroll, and related documents accurately and efficiently
  • Making decisions in accordance with City policies and procedures related to purchasing, accounts payable, and payroll processing
  • Understanding and carrying out written and oral instructions
  • Preparing clear and accurate financial and payroll records and reports
  • Organizing, prioritizing tasks, and exercising sound independent judgment within established guidelines
  • Maintaining files, records, and documentation
  • Communicating clearly and effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Maintaining confidentiality of City documents and records
  • Exercising tact and diplomacy in sensitive situations
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
