About the Position:
Under general supervision, the Maintenance Worker I (Flex) performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled tasks related to the cleanup and maintenance of public areas impacted by illegal dumping and homeless encampments. Incumbents work as part of a field crew responsible for removing debris, abandoned materials, and trash from public rights-of-way, parks, and other City property in order to maintain safe and sanitary conditions.
Typical duties may include loading and hauling debris and refuse, clearing brush and overgrown vegetation, assisting with street and storm drain maintenance, operating hand and power tools, and supporting traffic control at work sites. Employees in this role frequently work outdoors and may be exposed to challenging environmental conditions while performing physically demanding work.
This classification is considered a flex position and is typically filled at the Maintenance Worker I level. As employees gain experience and demonstrate proficiency in performing the full range of duties, they may have the opportunity to advance to Maintenance Worker II.

A Day in the Life:
Throughout the day, team members may remove debris and refuse from public areas, assist with clearing brush and overgrown vegetation, load materials for disposal, and help maintain safe access to sidewalks, streets, and other public spaces. Employees frequently operate hand and power tools and may assist with traffic control to ensure safe working conditions for both the crew and the public.
Work is performed outdoors in varying weather conditions and requires physical activity such as lifting, bending, walking, and loading materials. At the end of the shift, crews ensure equipment is cleaned and properly stored and document work completed for the day.

Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and one year of skilled experience in public works related construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
A Maintenance Worker I may be considered for advancement to Maintenance Worker II after demonstrating proficiency to perform the full range of duties of the latter class and obtaining a valid Class B Commercial driver's license. Proficiency criteria and the process for demonstrating performance at the levels established in the criteria are established jointly by hiring authorities and the Director of Human Resources, and are described in a separate document.
Typically, a Maintenance Worker I is expected to be capable of meeting the proficiency criteria within an 12-24 month period, depending on an individual's prior experience and progression in performing the full range of Maintenance Worker II duties as described in the established performance criteria.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's vehicle insurance policy: Class C for Maintenance Worker I; Class B Commercial for Maintenance Worker II. A Class B Commercial license with Airbrake Endorsement required for some assignments.
Employees in this classification may be required to participate in call back or standby duty and are subject to be on-call, which may include a rotating schedule including nights, weekends and holidays.
Knowledge of:
- Techniques and materials used in the maintenance and repair of streets, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains and related facilities.
- Maintenance, adjustment and utilization of power and hand tools related to street maintenance/repair.
- Laws and regulations pertaining to work site safety and traffic control; proper placement of cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job sites.
- Safe work methods.
Ability to:
- Follow work direction and maintenance procedures at work sites.
- Operate assigned equipment and vehicles safely and follow safe work practices and procedures.
- Adjust and perform preventive maintenance and make minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
- Operate and maintain a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in the work.
- Perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time.
- Keep basic written records of work performed.
- Read and understand street maps and written instructions.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work.
- Respond to call-out for emergencies as required; handle emergency situations as directed.
