BUILDING TRADES INSPECTOR (MULTI - TRADE INSPECTOR)

DEFINITION:  This position conducts field inspections of installations, extensions or repairs to buildings and /or systems involving two or more trades, including mechanical, electrical and/or systems involving two or more trades, including mechanical, electrical and/or plumbing systems for single family residences and commercial establishments.  Ensures compliance with relevant code.  
REPORTS TO:  Inspections Administrator 

An incumbent in this position may be designated as MULTI - TRADE INSPECTOR I, II or III dependent upon the qualification, experience and knowledge of the selected applicant. Be willing to accept all training assigned.

SALARY RANGE:
$29.24-$43.85 (Multi- Trades Inspector I)
$30.70-$46.05 (Multi- Trades Inspector II)
$32.23-$48.35 (Multi- Trades Inspector III)

Multi Trades Inspector I:

  • Primarily Building Inspector. 

  • Schedules and performs inspections of building systems to ensure compliance with state/local codes and policies.

  • Accurately document inspections performed, determinations made, and corrective actions taken.

  • Provide technical advice to assist contractors and citizens in resolving building compliance problems.

  • Schedule and perform inspections for other trades as needed to ensure compliance with local and state codes and policies. 

  • Review building plans for building system design to ensure compliance with local and state requirements.

  • Shall continue obtaining certifications until Level III certified in all trades.

  • Schedule and attend certification courses when eligible.

  • Schedule exams when eligible.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Multi Trades Inspector II:

  • Performs inspections of residential and commercial building projects for compliance with North Carolina building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical codes.
  • Reviews permit applications and plans; notes corrections to meet code standards.
  • Accurately document inspections performed, determinations made, and corrective actions taken.

  • Answers inquiries by phone or in person.
  • Research building codes.
  • Schedule and attend certification courses as courses are made available.
  • Shall continue obtaining certifications until Level III certified in all trades.

  • Schedule exams when eligible.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Multi Trades Inspector III:

  • Performs inspections of residential and commercial building projects for compliance with North Carolina building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical codes.
  • Accurately document inspections performed, determinations made, and corrective actions taken.

  • Reviews permit applications and plans; notes corrections to meet code standards.
  • Answers inquiries by phone or in person.
  • Research building codes.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.



Multi- Trades Inspector I
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • One (1) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Immediately apply for all 4 probationary certificates.
Multi- Trades Inspector II
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Two (2) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience. 
  • Hold all 4 level II standard certificates and probationary level III’s in each trade.
  • Or hold a level III standard certificate in one trade and probationary I in all other trades.
Multi- Trades Inspector III
  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Three (3) years’ experience in a related field.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  
  • Hold all 4 level III standard certificates.
  • Knowledge of building, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical codes. 

  • Knowledge of building inspection policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of the city's ordinances. 

  • Knowledge of construction materials, methods, and standards. 

  • Skill in the interpretation and application of local and state policies, codes, and   laws.

  •  Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions. 

  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports. 

  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships. 

  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations. 

  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment. 

  • Skill in interpersonal relations. 

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS: The Chief Building Inspector assigns work in terms of very general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results. 

GUIDELINES: Guidelines include North Carolina building, electrical, plumbing and mechanical codes. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.  

COMPLEXITY: The work consists of varied building inspection duties. Strict regulations contribute to the complexity of the work. 

SCOPE AND EFFECT: The purpose of this position is to participate in the City's inspection services.  Success in this position contributes to the enforcement of building codes. 

PERSONAL CONTACTS: Contacts are typically with co-workers, architects, engineers, surveyors, contractors, property owners, and members of the general public.

 PURPOSE OF CONTACTS: Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, provide services, motivate and influence persons, and justify or settle matters. 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while standing, stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, and distinguishes between shades of color. 

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, and occasional cold or inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices, such as masks, goggles, or gloves. 

SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:  None.
