What are the responsibilities and job description for the PRODUCTION TECH I position at City of Rockwall?

Under general supervision of the Pump Tech Field Supervisor, performs semi-skilled technical work in the maintenance and repair of water and wastewater facilities and structures. Employees in this class are responsible for ensuring the efficient pump, mechanical, and electrical operation of equipment, machinery, and related apparatus at water and wastewater stations. The position is responsible for maintaining records concerning work performed, and assisting in evaluating the performance of equipment and mechanical systems. Employees in this class possess dexterity and manipulative ability, utilize a variety of hand tools and equipment in the performance of tasks, and usually work in adverse environmental conditions. Position ensures the proper functioning and care of tools and diagnostic instruments and equipment under charge.
 
  • Assists and/or performs installation and rebuilding of various types of pumps, motors, piping, and related structures.
  • Operates various hand-held manual, gas, and electrically powered tools and instruments, i.e., air wenches, welders, torches, air hammers, chisels, and meters.
  • Tests, monitors and provides preventive maintenance to mechanical equipment, machinery, components, vehicles and related water/wastewater collection/distribution systems for the City.
  • Orders and maintains supply, equipment, machinery, and tool inventory.
  • Performs reports and record maintenance duties, and enters data in work order software system utilizing mobile data technology i.e., work performed, vehicle maintenance, parts, and supply use.
  • Functions on call for emergency stand-by duties and repairs.
  • Required to report for work punctually, work all scheduled hours, and any required overtime as deemed necessary.  Must maintain a physical condition and standards necessary for the proper performance of duties, with or without accommodation.
  • High school diploma, GED, or vocational training; supplemented by two to three years progressively responsible work experience in the installation, maintenance and repair of pumps, motors, and mechanical and electronic equipment, machinery, and structures; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
  • Must Possess a State of Texas Class A CDL driver's license or ability to obtain within (12) months. 

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge and the ability to use equipment and materials utilized in the installation and maintenance of a water/wastewater utility system.
  • Ability to receive and follow oral and/or written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with fellow employees.
  • Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, schematics, and maps.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate assigned maintenance and repair tasks
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply divide; calculate decimals and percentages.
  • Ability to work in a variety of adverse environmental conditions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Tasks involve frequent walking, standing; some lifting and carrying of moderate weight (12-20 pounds); and/or the operation of vehicles, office, shop, or hand tools in which manipulative skills and hand-eye coordination are important ingredients of safe and/or productive operations.
  • Tasks involve the regular, and at times sustained, performance of heavier physical tasks such as walking over rough or uneven surfaces, bending, stooping, working in confined spaces, and lifting or carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) items and occasionally very heavy (100 pounds or over) items.
  • Tasks involve the frequent use of coordination and manipulative skills in performing a variety of tasks with the full range of hand and power tools and shop equipment; or the skilled and complex operation of heavy equipment calling for adherence to exacting standards of depth, grade, dimensions, and contours.

Environmental Requirements:

  • Tasks require exposure to adverse environmental conditions (e.g. dirt, cold, rain, fumes), exposure to strong odors and/or smoke, toxic chemicals, dust, pollen or electric currents and exposure to elements that can cause illness (e.g., pathogenic substances, virus, and parasites).

Sensory Requirements:

  • Tasks require color, sound, odor, depth and visual perception and discrimination.
