The City of Roanoke's Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a crew lead for the Athletic Field Maintenance team to lead and support a work crew engaged in highly-skilled athletic field maintenance and sports turf management activities. The successful candidate will perform work in multiple skilled trades, assign/supervise the work of field and facility maintenance workers and technicians, and inspect work in progress to assure conformance with project specifications and industry best practices. Possession of a valid Virginia driver’s license required. May require night, weekend, and emergency weather-related work. See conditional requirements below.

SUMMARY
Supervises and performs skilled and manual labor related to athletic field care, maintenance, and preparation for play, primarily in River’s Edge Sports Complex. Oversees and assists with sports turf management, field prep including lining and dragging, sport equipment assembly and maintenance, mowing and weed control, and equipment maintenance and repair.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Knowledgeable in all aspects of professional sports turf management – warm and cool seasons
- Assigns and supervises the work of athletic field maintenance workers and technicians
- Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
- Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions and standards
- Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds, including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding.
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services the full range of power-driven equipment used in athletic field maintenance and sports turf management
- Requisitions necessary equipment and materials
- Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
- Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
- Assists with athletic events, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends
- Follows established safety procedures
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Supervises and trains a small crew of full-time and part-time staff in athletic field maintenance and sports turf management operations within assigned department. Will act as a section leader in the absence of the Park Management Coordinator.
CONDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be able to obtain a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) within 12 months of hire.
- Must be able to obtain a Pesticide Commercial Applicator Certification within 18 months of hire.
- Must be able to obtain a Fertilizer Applicator Certification within 18 months of hire.
QUALIFICATIONS

- Three to five years’ of related experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
- Possession of a valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification; or ability to obtain both within 18 months of hire.
- Ability to perform computer word processing, recordkeeping, and report preparation.
- Ability to perform physical labor in varying weather conditions.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
