The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is seeking a Maintenance Technician I to perform skilled turf and athletic field maintenance including mowing, weed-eating, edging, leaf mulching, aerating, fertilizing, seeding, dragging and marking. SUMMARY
Supervises and participates in skilled and manual labor with a crew of highly skilled Maintenance Technicians and Season Maintenance workers engaged in athletic field care, maintenance, and preparation for play primarily in River’s Edge Sports Complex. Performs skilled work in the operation of several types of motorized equipment (Steiner, Zero-Turn Mowers, Walk Behind Mowers), small gas powered two-stroke equipment (weed eaters, edgers, backpack blowers), athletic field equipment (drag machines, chalkers, stripers), and operates heavy and light equipment during snow removal. Assists with special events, snow removal and other emergency tasks; including some nights and weekends, as needed. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience. A Class B Commercial Driver License is preferred but the ability to obtain a Class B CDL learners permit and license within 12 months of hiring is a minimum. Possessing a Registered Technician Spraying license, a Commercial Pesticide Applicator Certification and a Fertilizer Applicator Certification are preferred but the ability to obtain all three within 18 months is required.
- Makes repairs and renovations to fields and grounds including mowing, mulching, aeration, grading, seeding, and sodding
- Prepares fields for game play, including marking and dragging operations
- Performs tasks such as fertilizer and pesticide application
- Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and services the full range of power-driven equipment used in athletic field maintenance and sports turf management
- Assists with event support, snow removal and other emergency tasks, including some nights and weekends, as needed
- Discusses job requirements with and receives detailed instruction from supervisor
- Inspects work in progress to assure conformance with instructions
- Maintains time and material records and prepares simple reports
- Coordinates with other department operational and technical personnel in the performance of assigned tasks
- Operates heavy and light equipment in snow removal
- Follows established safety procedures.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED) and one to three years of experience and/or training in athletic turf maintenance and management or equivalent combination of education and experience preferred.
