The City of Richmond Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified and energetic candidate to fill the position of Lifeguard. The position will report to the Head Lifeguard who oversees the swimming pool in the absence of the Pool Manager. This position involves the daily operations of an aquatic recreation facility including patron safety, leading programs, and day to day operations.
  • Ensures public safety in and around the pool by actively surveying the entire pool, the pool deck, and surrounding areas for patrons needing assistance. Follows the department's rules and regulations to prevent injuries.
  • Greet patrons.
  • Conducts water fitness and swimming classes for patrons and prepares lesson plans.
  • Ensures facility upkeep by performing tasks such as maintaining pool chemical levels, utilizing and manipulating pool pumps, sweeping and mopping floors, spraying down areas, and replenishing toiletry supplies in restrooms and locker rooms.
  • Additional duties as assigned, such as answering questions, making announcements, maintaining skills and certifications, and attending meetings and training courses.

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or GED or vocational training
  • Two years of lifeguard experience
  • Three years of lifeguard experience is preferred
  • An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
 

LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • CPO/AFO certification
  • Lifeguard certification
  • WSI certification
  • First Aid and CPR/AED certification
  • Water Aerobics Certification is preferred
  • Bilingual with Spanish as a second language is a plus.
 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
TYPICAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: These are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.

Knowledge (some combination of the following):

  • Lifeguard practices, actions, skills
  • Swim strokes (e.g. arm pull, flutter kick)
  • Emergency Action Plan (EAP)
  • Basic first aid knowledge 
  • CPR
  • Basic water chemistry knowledge
  • Basic knowledge of water exercise
  • Equipment such as stereo, water exercise equipment (such as dumbbell, noodles, exercise ball), handicap chair lift, pool pumps/chemical feeders, pool vacuum, skimmers, shepherd's crook, rescue tube, ring buoy, first aid equipment (such as AED, backboard, pocket mask, bag valve mask), and credit/debit card machine
  • Use software such as RecTrac/WebTrac, Rapids/Oracle, and SABA (Red Cross Instructor Programming)
 

Skills (some combination of the following):

  • Strong swimmer
  • Administering first aid and CPR
  • Operating an AED (Automated External Defibrillation)
  • Maintaining full awareness of the pool area
  • Providing customer service to people of varying backgrounds
  • Teaching swimming skills to people of all ages
 

Abilities (some combination of the following):

  • Physically able to perform the duties of a lifeguard such as swimming, towing in a person, rescuing a person, performing lifesaving measures if necessary)
  • Performing water safety rescues in shallow and deep water
  • Written and oral communication
  • Public speaking

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS: Working conditions may include exposure to travel to other locations within the City of Richmond as well as outside of the City of Richmond; exposure to hazardous physical conditions such as mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, etc.; atmospheric conditions such as fumes, odors, dusts, gases, and poor ventilation; inadequate lighting; intense noise; and environmental hazards such as disruptive people, imminent danger, and a threatening environment. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT: Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand, walk, push, pull, lift, grasp, feel, talk, hear, see, use repetitive motions, work with one's fingers, and climb. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be very heavy work (exerting in excess of 100 pounds of force occasionally, in excess of 50 pounds of force frequently, and in excess of 20 pounds force constantly to move objects), but may differ based on area of focus. The working conditions may contain environmental hazards, depending on area of focus.
