What are the responsibilities and job description for the Custodian (Facilities) position at City of Richmond?
The City of Richmond Department of General Services is seeking highly qualified candidates to fill the position of Custodian in the Facilities Management Division. The incumbent is responsible for spaces for ensuring assigned areas are properly prepared for day to day operations.
Work hours for this position are scheduled from 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm and may occasionally include scheduling beyond normal work hours.
- Collecting trash, tidying furniture and dusting surfaces
- Sweeping and mopping floors and vacuuming carpets
- Washing and sanitize commodes, sinks and restrooms and restocking disposables
- Wiping mirrors and windows
- Maintaining outer premises and cleaning entrances
- Utilizing insecticides to prevent infestation by dangerous pests
- Performing maintenance and minor repairs as needed
- Reporting major damages and overseeing repairs
- Securing facilities after operating hours by locking doors, closing windows and setting up the alarms where required
- Disposing of hazardous cleaning chemicals and materials properly
- Operating floor maintenance equipment
- Maintaining floors to include cleaning, stripping, waxing, etc.
- Performing other related duties as assigned
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- Education sufficient for satisfactory job performance
- High school diploma or GED preferred
- No experience required
- One (1) year related experience preferred
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
- A current and valid driver's license is highly preferred and may be required to perform some duties of the position
- Experience with floor maintenance

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:Due to the nature of work assignments, incumbents must be able to perform detailed work on multiple, concurrent tasks, with frequent interruptions and under time constraint. The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, lift, grasp, hear, see, and perform repetitive motions; frequently balance, stoop, crouch, reach, pull, finger, feel, and talk; and occasionally climb, kneel, and crawl. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
