Description
The Department of Parks, Recreation and Community Facilities is seeking a highly qualified parks and facility maintenance professional to fill the position of Maintenance and Operations Crew Chief. The successful candidate will have demonstrated parks and facility management experience in an urban parks and recreation agency, will have a clear understanding of trail planning, construction and development, and have the ability to work with a diverse population.
This position directs and oversees labor crews in the maintenance and improvement of built features, such as ball fields, shelters, community centers, planted landscapes, and park grounds contained within the Southern/Northern Divisions of the Department of Parks Recreation and Community Facilities. As needed, this position will also support projects and improvements with the Trails and Trades units, volunteer and special events, as well as the Workforce Development Program. This position serves as a lead worker or first-level maintenance supervisor over a small crew, reporting to the Maintenance and Operations Superintendent.
Duties include but are not limited to
- Providing lead direction to work crews or teams including establishing schedules and making assignments
- Reviewing/inspecting work products
- Training and overseeing other employees and seasonal staff
- Assisting crew with complex tasks
- Making performance evaluation recommendations
- Gathering maintenance data
- Maintaining and updating databases
- Monitoring maintenance requirements
- Documenting and submitting timesheets
- Maintaining files and records, and preparing reports
- Making repair recommendations
- Working with volunteer groups, community partners and Friends of
- Groups
- Other duties/projects as assigned
Qualifications, Special Certifications and Licenses
MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or GED
- One year of college or specialized training in area of focus
- Two years of equipment operation/driving experience or maintenance experience in the area related to assignment
- An equivalent combination of training and experience (as approved by the department) may be used to meet the minimum qualifications of the classification
LICENSING, CERTIFICATIONS, and/or OTHER SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- A valid Commonwealth of Virginia Driver's License within 30 days of hire
- CDL license
- Virginia Pesticide Applicators License
- NRPA Playground Safety Inspector License

The essential duties of this classification may require the ability to regularly stand, walk, push, pull, finger, talk, see, hear and use repetitive motion; frequently feel, grasp, frequently talk and hear; and occasionally balance, stoop, crouch, stand, pull, grasp, and feel. The working conditions may include environmental hazards. In terms of the physical strength to perform the essential duties, this classification is considered to be medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force frequently or constantly to move objects.
