To provide general maintenance of City-owned streets, park grounds, trails, buildings, and related facilities and equipment throughout the spring, summer, and fall months. Duties include mowing and trimming; pruning and planting trees; performing landscape projects; maintaining athletic fields; collecting trash; constructing new facilities; and operating equipment while working in a variety of weather conditions. Daily tasks will vary based on seasonal and operational needs.
This is a temporary, AFSCME Union position working forty (40) hours per week, Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., beginning in the spring and running through the fall months based on workload and operational needs. - Must be 18 years of age or older on the first day of employment
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED
- Must possess a valid Minnesota driver’s license in good standing
- Must have the ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Must have the ability to work in a variety of weather conditions including cold or hot temperatures, high humidity, wind, or rain
- Must have the ability to finish work in a timely and efficient manner
- Must have the ability to get along with others including supervisors and coworkers
- Previous experience working for a municipality or county
- Previous paid professional experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, or construction
- Possession of a valid Minnesota Class A and/or Class B driver’s license with air brake and/or tanker endorsements
- Lead and assist seasonal parks staff with daily work assignments
- Mowing and trimming of City owned parks and trails
- Perform landscaping duties, including planting trees, shrubs, and flowers
- Prune trees and shrubs
- Maintain athletic fields (baseball, softball, soccer), including field striping and dragging
- Assisting with park irrigation
- Perform basic carpentry, construction, painting, and repair work on City facilities and property
- Assist with the construction of new park and facility improvements
- Collect trash from parks, trails, roadsides, and other public areas
- Operate equipment including mowers, weed whips, saws, pruners, and related tools
- Perform basic vehicle maintenance (e.g., oil and fluid checks)
- Assist with City events including setup, teardown, and on-site support
- Perform other duties within the capabilities of the seasonal worker as assigned by a supervisor or lead worker
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions in English
- Ability to provide basic direction and leadership to seasonal staff
- Working knowledge of hand tools and basic mechanical equipment
- Ability to safely operate equipment and follow safety procedures
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Ability to perform physical labor in a variety of weather conditions
- Ability to sustain physically demanding work for extended periods
- Ability to develop and maintain positive working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, and the public
- Effective communication skills
- Willingness to learn utility operations and procedures
