The City of Raleigh is seeking a Senior Fleet Maintenance Specialist to join our Transportation department. Joining our Transportation Maintenance Division will provide an exciting opportunity to play a vital role in the maintenance of critical infrastructure such as sidewalks, curb and gutter, asphalt, medians, and storm drains. As a member of our 222 person staff, you will contribute to maintenance of 1,130 miles of streets and sidewalks; the upkeep of over 33,000 curb ramps; and the protection of 3.2 million linear feet of stormwater pipes connecting more than 32,000 drainage inlets.

This position is devoted to providing repair and maintenance of equipment, vehicles, and related systems. This role performs a broad range of specialized vehicle and equipment repair requiring advanced knowledge and experience, using independent initiative to solve technical problems. Incumbents may assist in training staff and serve as a second level of check for accuracy or supervise/lead lower-level staff. Decision-making includes how and when tasks are carried out within an operational process, limited by the selection of the process and establishment of deadlines and outcomes.

About Us:

The Transportation Fleet Maintenance Unit is responsible for the maintenance and repair of various types of equipment used by Transportation crews including dump trucks, flusher trucks, street sweepers, automated leaf trucks, pull behind leaf machines, anti-icing equipment, and snow removal equipment.

This position is required to work extended hours during special events, emergencies, and inclement weather.

  • Repairs various types of equipment such as chain saws, dump trucks, leaf machines, snow and ice removal equipment, front end loaders, backhoes, leaf machines, and knuckleboom loaders

  • Diagnoses, repairs, services, and maintains heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment; determines need for repair or replacement of components; determines in-house serviceability or need for external vendor repair; replaces tires; repairs or rebuilds hydraulic valves, wiring systems, engine repairs, brakes, suspension, electrical systems, heating, and air conditioning systems, and/or performs specialty equipment repair work; performs road calls for field equipment repairs

  • Performs preventative maintenance of vehicles and equipment; prepares and maintains maintenance schedules; inspects and tests maintenance and repair work to ensure quality levels and completion

  • May serve as Lead Technician, as needed. Lead Technicians generate work orders, monitor work quality and completion, generates and tracks work orders. May also assist with daily shop operations and completion of related paperwork; communicates with customers regarding vehicle and equipment issues; provide supervisory coverage when needed

  • Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned

Education and Experience:

6 months training beyond High School in Automotive Repair or related field; 3 to 5 years’ experience in automotive repair, vehicle electronics, or a related field

OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 90 days of hire

Knowledge of:

  • Specialized maintenance and repairs based on area of expertise

  • Vehicle and police equipment electrical systems

  • Fleet software and police equipment software   

  • Use of automotive electrical testing equipment

  • Characteristics and repairs of automotive, police, and emergency equipment

  • Automotive and electronic wiring

  • Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications

Skill in:

  • Leading and coaching others

  • Diagnosing, assessing, and evaluating maintenance and repair needs

  • Utilizing computer and relevant software applications

  • Providing customer service and interacting with vendors and internal City departments

  • Performing vehicle equipment inspections and identifying issues related to functionality and safety

  • Using automotive servicing tools and equipment for diagnostics and repairs

  • Customer service

  • Prioritizing work assignments

Ability to:

  • Maintain operational vehicles and perform quality control

  • Solve technical problems

  • Work as a team member with other Specialists and with Fleet Maintenance Technicians

  • Maintain and organize files, shop computer databases and paperwork

  • Perform automotive, police and emergency equipment servicing and repairs

  • Transport and move vehicles as needed

  • Install, repair or remove police equipment

  • Understand and carry out oral and written instructions

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Work is typically performed in an outdoor environment, street environment, vehicle, or in a shop environment. Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar indoor environment.

Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts. Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals or substances, and loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction).
