Raleigh Water is seeking a dedicated Plant Mechanic to perform skilled mechanical, facilities, and grounds maintenance work at treatment plants, lift stations, and related sites. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of critical infrastructure that supports wastewater collection and treatment for the community.

This position offers the opportunity to apply hands-on mechanical skills in a team-oriented environment while supporting the essential services Raleigh Water provides to the community.

About You: 
The ideal candidate is a skilled mechanic with hands-on experience maintaining and repairing pumps, motors, valves, and other mechanical systems in an industrial, utility, or plant setting. They are detail-oriented, safety-focused, and comfortable troubleshooting complex equipment issues under minimal supervision. Strong mechanical aptitude, problem-solving ability, and commitment to preventive maintenance are key strengths.

The candidate should also bring:

  • Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pumping systems

  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, diagrams, and maintenance records

  • Willingness to perform a mix of mechanical, facilities, and grounds maintenance tasks

  • Reliability and flexibility to respond to urgent repairs when needed

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with operators, electricians, and other staff

A background in utilities, wastewater, or industrial plant maintenance, along with a focus on keeping equipment in top working condition, will set the best candidates apart.

Work hours are Monday - Friday; 6:00 am - 2:00 pm

  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and replace pumps, motors, valves, meters, piping, and related equipment

  • Perform preventive and corrective maintenance to maximize equipment performance and minimize downtime

  • Troubleshoot mechanical problems and determine repair or replacement needs

  • Assist with facilities and grounds upkeep, including minor building, structural, and equipment repairs

  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities

  • Safely operate tools, equipment, and vehicles; transport vehicles and equipment to repair shops as needed

  • Follow established safety procedures and contribute to a safe work environment

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency; 1 to 3 years’ experience in water/wastewater plant operation and maintenance, or related work

OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted

Licenses or Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver’s License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of forcefrequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar environment, outdoor environment, or a construction site.

Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction). Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts,fumesor airborne particles, and toxic or caustic substances.

Salary : $49,900 - $74,900
