The Water Plant Mechanic position is part of the Plant Industrial Trades Series, devoted to skilled trades work in the construction, alteration and repair of utility plant facilities and equipment. Responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of chemical feed systems and equipment supporting the operations of a large-scale water treatment and pumping facility. Performs a variety of mechanical, facilities and grounds maintenance work at assigned plants, lift stations and related sites. Including inspecting, maintaining, repairing or replacing pumps, valves and meters critical to water treatment, distribution, and pumping processes.
 
 Key responsibilities include troubleshooting and diagnosing mechanical related issues. Inspection of the water treatment plants and remote sites, handling work orders through our Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) and work scheduling. The mechanic collaborates closely with operations, electrical, and instrumentation teams to maintain system integrity and operational efficiency.

  • Utilizes techniques and methods for organizing, prioritizing, assigning and monitoring work

  • Maintains, troubleshoots, repairs, upgrades, installs machinery, chemical feed systems, plumbing systems, pumps, valves, gearboxes, pneumatic/hydraulic systems and other critical equipment in a continuous-running work environment

  • Reads and understands mechanical prints and O&M’s

  • Observes and listens to mechanical performance to troubleshoot malfunctions and test performance of equipment

  • Performs preventative maintenance, facilities maintenance, inspections, adjustments, and replacement of defective parts, equipment and systems

  • Ensures the maintenance work area, warehouse, facility, grounds and storage areas remain neat, clean, safe and orderly. Cleans and repairs hand tools and power tools used for mechanical equipment maintenance

  • Prepares job sites for projects and repairs, assembles and organizes equipment, tools, and materials

  • Utilizes and updates hard-copy and digital copies of equipment, operations and maintenance manuals

  • Completing preventative maintenance work orders using the CMMS in addition to creating work orders and documenting time, equipment and materials

  • Operates equipment such as scissor lifts, forklifts, backhoes, skid steers, boats, UTV’s, etc.

  • Performs additional duties as assigned based on departmental needs

  • Overtime and participation in an on-call rotation schedule

  • Responds to emergency repairs as needed due to inclement weather or other emergency-related events

Education and Experience:

High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency and 1 to 3 years’ experience in water/wastewater plant operation and maintenance, or related work

OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Licenses and Certifications:

  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire

Knowledge of:

  • Standard practices, methods and materials of assigned work

  • Business math concepts

  • Filing and record-keeping principles

  • Occupational hazards and applicable safety principles and practices

  • Uses and properties of supplies and equipment

  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, and regulations

  • Specialized equipment relevant to area of assignment

  • Utilizing communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisors, the general public and others to sufficiently exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Work Environment and Physical Effort:
Medium: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Work Environment:
Employees may occasionally work in an office or similar environment, outdoor environment, or a construction site.

Work Exposures:
There is frequent exposure to loud noises (85 decibels average over 8-hour working day such as heavy trucks, jack hammers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, construction). Employees may occasionally be exposed to extreme cold (below 32 degrees), extreme heat (above 100 degrees), moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic substances.

Salary : $49,900 - $74,900
