Job Summary


The City of Portland is actively seeking a qualified and enthusiastic candidate to fill an opening for a Trades Worker within Social Services. This individual should have significant prior experience with carpentry, masonry, plumbing, and electrical trades work to perform repair work on City buildings, grounds, fences, and equipment. The Trades Worker will report directly to the Facility Manager, Facility Coordinator or designee.


Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Performs carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical repairs to buildings, grounds, fences and equipment.
  • Performs concrete and brick masonry demolition, repair and construction.
  • Paints interior and exterior of buildings, rooms, walls, ceilings, and other surfaces.
  • Performs or assists with demolition and rehab projects.
  • Works with custodial staff as needed to wash windows at various buildings using mechanical lifts.
  • Operates trucks and other motorized equipment in the performance of maintenance functions, to include snow removal.
  • Extensive knowledge using hand and bench tools and the ability and willingness to teach other proper use.


Required Skills & Experience:

  • Hold a valid Class C Maine Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain state licensure or certifications as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and masonry repairs, with sufficient knowledge of hand and bench tools necessary for each project, as well as the ability to teach others.
  • Ability to lead and complete basic construction projects, including ability to oversee a team and the project to completion.
  • Ability to work independently and remain focused on multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Working knowledge of the best practices for removal of lead paint, asbestos, mold, and other environmental hazards.
  • Basic knowledge of welding with qualifications to be certified.

Expected Hours/Schedule:

This position works 40 hours a week, Monday-Friday, 7:30AM-4PM

Salary & Benefits:

This is a union position, Labor & Trades (Grade 51) - Salary range starting at $25.30/hour.
