    POSITION OVERVIEW:
    Skilled Trades Worker III, 2nd Shift Supervisor – District Wide

    Under direction of the Facilities Manager, performs skilled and trades supervisory work in the repair and construction of building fixtures, furniture, and wooden frameworks for structures. Work of the class involves supporting allied trades in maintenance and repair projects and performing skilled carpentry along with minor electrical and plumbing work. General instructions are received from the manager regarding work to be done, but the employee is expected to use considerable discretion in determining proper work methods. Work involves performance of the more difficult and advanced duties connected with carpentry projects. Some positions require involvement in the advanced knowledge of a variety of maintenance, construction, and special needs projects.

    ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assists in the planning and successful completion of work performed by carpenters, glaziers, locksmiths, flooring specialists, roofers, electricians, plumbers and other skilled and semiskilled personnel in the maintenance and repair of existing facilities and in the construction and installation of new structures and fixtures
    • Estimates time and material needs; obtains price quotes
    • Inspects work in progress and upon completion for compliance with departmental standards and good safety practices
    • Supervises 2nd shift maintenance staff
    • Ensures proper and timely completion of work orders
    • May make changes in job plans as needed
    • Maintains records of job time and materials
    • Maintains purchase records
    • Evaluates work requests and discusses requests with users, superiors, employees or contractors doing the work
    • Performs carpentry, plumbing, electrical and mechanical repairs to buildings, grounds, fences and equipment not requiring a license or within current license authority
    • Prepares drawings of cabinets, bookcases, doors, desks, counters, and other wooden fixtures to be manufactured in the shop
    • Selects lumber, sets up machines and measures and cuts component parts to size
    • Repairs and remodels furniture, doors, windows, and roofs; removes damaged or worn sections and manufactures replacement parts
    • Cuts and trims molding, wood forms, and arches
    • Operates power and hand saws, jointers, shapers, jigsaws, and planers as part of millwork and cabinet making operations
    • Responsible for the safe and efficient use of shop equipment and materials
    • Repairs and replaces locks for doors, cabinets, files or desks that are damaged or broken
    • Repairs and replaces panic devices, door closures and related equipment such as AI phones
    • Assists sheet metal, roof, or floor covering mechanics on specialized repair or construction projects
    • Assists contract and in-house electricians and plumbers with miscellaneous repairs and installations
    • Performs electrical and plumbing work that does not require a professional license
    • Performs related work as assigned

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
    • Thorough knowledge of standard methods, materials, and tools of the carpentry trade with particular emphasis in the maintenance of building fixtures and flooring
    • Considerable knowledge of the qualities and uses of various woods employed in the construction and repair of furniture and standard building fixtures
    • Some positions require thorough knowledge of cabinetmaking
    • Ability to read and work from blueprints and sketches
    • Ability to prepare drawings of new furniture or replacements for damaged sections
    • Ability to layout walls using metal studs, hang and tape sheetrock and apply finishes
    • Knowledge of various fasteners and adhesives used in the building trades
    • Ability to oversee crews and general contractors working on school projects
    • Ability to work effectively with in-house and contract allied trades professionals
    • Skill in the use and care of hand and power tools of the carpentry, cabinet making, and locksmith trades and the willingness to teach others proper use
    • Ability to perform plumbing and electrical support tasks
    • Knowledge of practices associated with appropriate actions to take when encountering environmental or other hazards such as lead paint, asbestos and mold
    • Must possess the physical strength and agility necessary to perform essential functions of the job including the ability to withstand exposure to varied climatic conditions
    • Good human relations and communications skills.

    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
    • High School or GED diploma required.
    • Considerable and varied experience of increasing responsibility in a variety of skilled general carpentry and cabinet making work required.
    • Other combinations of applicable education, training, and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities, and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.
    • Some lead/supervisory experience is desirable.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
    • Lift items weighing up to 100 pounds
    • Work in confined spaces, at heights, and in varying weather conditions
    • Regular use of ladders, lifts, and scaffolding

    CREDENTIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Possession of a valid Maine noncommercial Class C driver's license, or equivalent.
    • Must have and maintain a good driving record
    • Journeyman's plumbing and/or electrical license desired
    • Must have the ability to obtain state licensure and/or certification for specialized trades required of the job
    • Must have and pass a post-offer physical exam
    • Maine State fingerprint (CHRC) authorization (more info)

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Availability for emergency response during evenings, weekends, and holidays
    • Flexible schedule required during peak seasonal projects, especially during summer break periods

    EMPLOYMENT DETAILS:

    • Year-round position
    • Permanent
    • Full Time, 1.0 FTE
    • Hourly wage range: $26.60–36.63 per hour (dependent upon relevant experience)
    • Covered under the BASE contract (see 2023-2026 CBA here)
