Major Function and Purpose
This is a temporary assignment to provide support for the functions of a municipal government while assisting in a variety of administrative, research, fiscal or management-directed projects. 

General Function
The Intern provides assistance to the assigned department.  Depending upon the assignment, work may include functions such as data entry; creating, reviewing, updating and analyzing data; sorting, maintaining, updating, and cataloging various documents and filing systems; observing, recording and summarizing data; database development; research and report writing; special project coordination; and assisting other employees with assigned tasks.

Specific duties will vary depending upon the assigned department, but may include:
  • Enter data accurately into standardized or proprietary software programs. 
  • Maintain, update or compile filing and record systems in accordance with department procedures, policies, and state retention requirements.
  • Scan, photocopy, sort, and distribute documents as required.
  • Create, review, observe, record, update and analyze data. 
  • Provide summaries of data. 
  • Research and compile information. 
  • Provide customer service in person, via telephone, or through email.
  • Prepare documents and reports. 
  • Assist with coordination and completion of special projects or events. 
  • Reliable and regular attendance is required.
  • Other duties as assigned

Contacts and Relationships
The Intern will report to designated staff member. Assignments may come from multiple departments and employees to whom the Intern is responsible for the assigned task.  Interaction with employees, citizens and customers both in person and on the telephone is likely, the level of which will depend upon the assignment. 

Working Conditions
Intern work is typically performed in an office setting although in some cases an intern may go out into the field to collect data or make observations. Repeated interruption of the work routine is typical, and the work area may be noisy.  Telecommuting within Washington state may be permitted at the supervisor’s discretion in accordance with City policy.Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of basic office practices and procedures including English and basic math; and, if required by the assignment, industry/trade knowledge relevant for the anticipated project or assignment. 
Skills in various computer software programs, such as Microsoft Office and internet applications; specialized software, if required by the assignment; specialized terminology and understanding of key concepts related to specific areas of study, if required by the assignment; use of English both orally and in writing; and research and analysis of data. 
Ability to work effectively both as a member of a team and independently; provide excellent customer service; alternate between various assignments as priorities change; maintain self-motivation; and creatively problem solve.

Physical Requirements
Continuous repetitive arm/hand movement and sitting for extended periods of time are essential to the performance of job duties.  Must be able to discern voice conversation both via telephone and in person and have hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate computers and other office equipment.  Must have the ability to produce legible handwritten documents.   May be required to lift and/or carry up to twenty-five (25) pounds.

Minimum Requirements
High School Diploma or GED is required.   Depending on assignment, valid driver’s license may be required upon hire.  In this case, out of state candidates are required to obtain a WA state driver’s license in accordance with state law.  
Preferred qualifications include an interest in municipal government and/or the function(s) of the position for which the applicant is applying. Any combination of experience and training that provides the desired skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.

Salary : $44,907 - $49,899
