The City wishes to hire an Information Technology (IT) Intern for 2026. The IT Intern provides entry-level technical support to City staff under the direction of IT personnel. This position assists with helpdesk requests, workstation setup and deployment, basic troubleshooting, documentation, and administrative IT projects. The internship is designed to provide hands-on experience in municipal information technology operations within a public service environment.

To be considered, the candidate must be currently enrolled in, or graduated within six months from, a college or university. The candidate must be studying information technology, computer science or a related discipline, with coursework or practical knowledge of IT support. The completion of at least 45 credit hours and prior customer service experience are preferred. It is anticipated the internship will last up to four months, depending on operational needs and the intern's schedule.

The IT Intern assists staff in the Executive Department’s IT Division with providing technical assistance, maintaining computer systems, and configuring hardware and software.

  • Assists staff in responding to requests for assistance via IT helpdesk.
  • Assists staff with deployment, configuration, and inventory tracking of equipment.
  • Conducts research and collects data.
  • Provides training and support in the use of computer systems and software.
  • Develops and updates technical documentation, user guides, and knowledge base articles.
  • Maintains timely and regular attendance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
The intern must be enrolled in or graduated within six months from a college or university. The intern must be studying information technology, computer science or a related technical discipline, with coursework or practical knowledge of IT support. The completion of a minimum of 45 credit hours and prior customer service experience are preferred. 

Knowledge of:
  • Basic properties of computer systems and software.
  • Microsoft Windows operating systems and Office 365 applications
  • Fundamental principles of network and system security.
  • Best practices in task management.

Ability to:
  • Adhere to city policies regarding cybersecurity, confidentiality, and acceptable use of technology resources.
  • Troubleshoot and problem solve as needed.
  • Organize and prioritize multiple tasks in a ticket-driven environment.
  • Effectively communicate technical information to non-technical users, both orally and in writing.
  • Learn quickly, meet deadlines, take direction, and contribute to a team.
  • Support and model the identified vision, values and behaviors of the organization.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Use initiative and independent judgment within established procedural guidelines.
  • Operate a personal computer utilizing a variety of standard and specialist software.

License and Certification Requirements
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

Working Conditions
This position is not eligible for a hybrid (in-office and telecommuting) work schedule. The work schedule is variable, with weeks occasionally or frequently exceeding 30 hours, but not guaranteed. The daily schedule is generally 7:30 am until 4 pm on week days. In order to accommodate classes, a flexible schedule may be approved. Work is primarily performed in an office which is busy, oriented to public service and subject to occasional work interruptions. Noise level is moderate. 

Physical Requirements
Continuous repetitive arm/hand movement is essential to performance. The incumbent in this position must be able to discern voice conversation, have the physical ability to perform essential job functions, and have hand-eye coordination sufficient to operate computers, do keyboarding and operate other office equipment. The incumbent must have the ability to produce legible handwritten documents and may need to push, pull, lift and carry up to 20 pounds. 

Benefits
This is a temporary position and is not eligible for most City-paid benefits, with the exception of sick leave. One hour of sick leave is earned for every 40 hours worked.
