City of Plantation Salary
Plantation, FL Full Time
POSTED ON 4/17/2026
AVAILABLE BEFORE 6/17/2026

The DOD SkillBridge program offers eligible service members a valuable pathway for gaining hands-on job training, employment skills development, apprenticeships, and internships during the final 180 days of their military service. Through this program, qualified participants may enroll in the Broward College Police Academy, working toward the standards set by both Broward College and the City of Plantation. Upon successfully completing the SkillBridge program and meeting all certification requirements, service members may be selected for a full-time position as a Certified Police Officer with the Plantation Police Department.

Disclaimer: Employment with the City of Plantation is contingent upon meeting all minimum position requirements and successfully completing the Police Academy. Completion of the SkillBridge program does not guarantee employment, and the City is not obligated to hire participants at the end of the 180-day period.
In this role, officers engage in the protection of life and property by enforcing laws and ordinances. Work is performed in accordance with departmental rules and regulations, with assignments and instructions provided by superior officers. All applicants must fulfill the requirements set by the Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission and the Plantation Police Department.

DOD SkillBridge Requirements:

  • Service Member Application and Recruitment Process
The service member must first apply to the DOD SkillBridge program and complete the entire recruitment process, which includes extensive background checks. If recommended for hire, they enter as a contracted, unpaid trainee for the initial 180 days due to the structure of the SkillBridge program, with no associated pay or benefits.
  • Responsibility During SkillBridge Program
While participating in SkillBridge, the service member remains accountable to their assigned military unit or command. Program managers may assist in overseeing their progress, but all administrative, ethical, and legal responsibilities remain with the service member's commander.
  • Employment Post-Completion
The SkillBridge program is designed to prepare service members for civilian employment through hands-on training and career development. While it increases the likelihood of employment within a related field, program completion does not guarantee a position with the specific industry partner.
  • Ethical Conflicts of Interest
Service members may work with civilian industry partners through the SkillBridge program, but must adhere to ethical standards. Commands typically provide ethics briefings covering topics such as pay, allowances, and gifts to ensure compliance with all guidelines.
  • Authorization for Enrollment
Industry partners are required to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Department of Defense, and each service member must receive written authorization from their unit commander before enrolling in the program.
  • Medical Care and Compensation
Throughout SkillBridge, the service member remains an employee of the Department of Defense, which continues to provide pay, benefits, medical care, disability coverage, and workers' compensation.
  • Billing for Labor Provided
Industry partners are prohibited from charging the government for any time or work provided by service members while participating in the SkillBridge program.
  • Non-Compete Agreements
Service members participating in SkillBridge should not sign any non-compete agreements. Partners who request such agreements risk compromising the integrity of the program. (For legal clarification: the program does not cover the costs of the academy if a service member does not stay with the Plantation Police Department after training due to the lack of a non-compete clause.)
