THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT CITY OF PLANTATION EMPLOYEES.
This is a non-exempt position which requires supervisory work in the management of both skilled and unskilled workers in the performance of diversified manual and maintenance work on municipal buildings and properties in support of the Parks Department.
Employees are hired as AT WILL employees that serve at the pleasure of the City and may be terminated at any time with or without cause.
Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Supervises and participates in a broad variety of field maintenance procedures and custodial duties.
Plans relevant work, assigns personnel to jobs, and secures all needed tools, equipment, supplies and material.
Prepares daily worklists and weekly personnel schedules.
Executes purchase orders authorized by the department director.
Enforces safety procedures and precautions throughout all stages of departmental projects.
Supervises and participates in the installation and maintenance of various sprinkler systems.
Performs various minor repairs and updates to relevant park facilities and buildings.
Supervises and participates in the landscaping, planting, sodding, trimming, mowing, edging, pruning, watering, and fertilizing of grass, flowers, shrubs and trees, islands, parks, recreation areas, and around public buildings.
Supervises and participates in the excavation of trenches and ditches.
Supervises and participates in the spraying of grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees with insecticides, fungicides, and weed killers.
Directs employees to execute and participate in a hurricane plan to completion.
Supervises and participates in the maintenance, repair, and construction of municipal parks and grounds, sidewalks, swales, storm drains, sport facilities, playground equipment and in the landscaping of city property as needed.
Exercises care and safety in use of equipment and tools required to complete assigned tasks and knowledge of safety rules and regulations prescribed by the city.
Assists in interviewing candidates for employment and recommends in the interest of the city that eligible candidates be hired, and that subordinates be transferred, promoted, reassigned, disciplined, or terminated as appropriate.
Performs related work as required and as directed.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of the practices and techniques used in the work of various assigned areas.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work of various assigned areas.
Knowledge of the maintenance and installation of irrigation systems.
Knowledge of effective methods and techniques of supervision of both skilled and unskilled personnel.
Knowledge of various athletic field installations, including mounds, repairs to clay, installation of base pines, home plates, and pitching rubbers.
Knowledge of various chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers, fungicides, and weedkillers.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards of the trade and of the proper use of safety practices.
Skill in written and verbal communication.
Skill in personnel supervision.
Skill in the operation of relevant equipment and in the use of hand and power tools.
Ability to supervise personnel in the execution of the city hurricane plan.
Ability to perform ballfield maintenance, which may include tasks of raking, lining, hoeing, watering, base installation, goal installation, etc.
Ability to work from and interpret work orders, blueprints, layouts, and sketches.
Ability to work flexible work schedule.
Ability to operate assigned equipment safely.
Ability to understand and carry out instructions and complete work assignments correctly.
Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods, often under hot and humid conditions.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with other city employees, department officials, and the general public.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalent; supplemented by a minimum of 3 years of experience in work involving horticulture, nursery, landscape, grounds, and/or parks; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
Licenses and Certifications:
Valid State of Florida driver’s license.
LiveScan Fingerprint Process
Incumbents in this job class are required to undergo a Level 2 Background Screening as required by the State of Florida. The screening includes a photograph, fingerprint-based searches of criminal records nationally, and is performed using the electronic LiveScan process.
Work Environment
This is a designated "Recovery" classification in the City's Emergency Operations Plan and will require the employee occupying this position to work for declared emergencies. Attendance at National Incident Management System (NIMS) training at the appropriate level is mandatory.
