Job Details

The City of Plano is seeking a skilled and dependable Facilities Maintenance Mechanic to support operations at the Plano Event Center. This is a journey-level position within the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic series, responsible for performing a wide variety of building and facility maintenance tasks in accordance with established procedures and guidelines. Work is typically performed independently to achieve desired outcomes; however, more advanced maintenance activities and system diagnostics may require supervisory guidance or consultative support. This role is essential to maintaining a safe, functional, and well-maintained environment for events, staff, and visitors.

Distinguishing Characteristics: This is a journey-level classification in the Facilities Maintenance Mechanic series. Employees in this role perform a variety of maintenance tasks following established procedures and guidelines to achieve desired outcomes. While most duties are performed independently, more advanced tasks and diagnostics may require supervision or consultative support.

Examples Of ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Performs general maintenance and repair of facilities, buildings, and properties, including but not limited to general repairs, snow/ice removal, carpentry, painting, flooring, doors, locksets, roofing, waterproofing, plumbing, appliances, and minor electrical repairs.
  • Assists senior personnel with heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system maintenance, while diagnostics and major repairs are performed by senior-level staff.
  • Collaborates with Facilities Construction Coordinators and Facilities Maintenance Supervisors to coordinate general construction and remodeling work performed by contracted services.
  • Conducts inspections of basic contracted replacement and construction work to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Independently performs scheduled preventive maintenance services and minor repairs at City facilities.
  • Maintains accurate records of work activities, including time, supplies, parts, and materials, using established procedures and systems. Proficiency in personal computer use and common software applications is required.
  • Assists in obtaining bids for simple repairs and equipment replacements, submitting bids to supervisors for award consideration.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance in accordance with the assigned work schedule.

  • Apply industry standards to identify issues with building components and mitigate potential safety hazards.
  • Assess routine maintenance and repair needs, implementing appropriate solutions within established guidelines.
  • Recommend solutions to supervisors for complex or unique issues requiring further evaluation.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of: Safety practices and proceduresrelated to facility operation, maintenance and repair. General construction, maintenance and repair of facilities, buildings, and properties, including but not limited to general repairs, carpentry, painting, flooring, doors, locksets, roofing, waterproofing, plumbing, appliances, and minor electrical repairs. Proficiency in personal computer use, common software applications and other industry technologies.

Skill in: Performing preventive maintenance and minor repairs on buildings and equipment. Operating light trucks and motorized equipment safely and efficiently. Using a variety of hand and power tools. Lifting and handling heavy objects safely. Communicating effectively, both verbally and in writing.

Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in general repair and maintenance of buildings and facilities required.

Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.

Licenses and Certifications: Must have a valid Class “C” Driver’s License) prior to employment (must obtain Texas Class “C” driver’s license within 30 days of hire per state law).

Conditions of Employment: Must pass a drug test, driver’s license check, criminal history background check, periodic CJIS background check (for positions requiring access into Police buildings) and social security number verification check. Can be promoted to Senior Mechanic position with required license and years of experience,

Physical Demands and Working Conditions: Must possess mobility to work in and around City buildings and facilities, to operate a motor vehicle and drive on surface streets ; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform light to medium physical work, to work in around machines, and to operate varied hand and power tools and equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio. The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards. Finger dexterity is needed to access, enter, and retrieve data using a computer keyboard or calculator and to operate above-mentioned tools and equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, and reach when completing maintenance and repairs. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects weighing up to 75 pounds, or heavier weights with the use of proper equipment.

Employees work in and around buildings and facilities and are exposed to cold and hot temperatures, heights, road hazards, chemicals, mechanical and electrical hazards, and hazardous physical substances and fumes.
