The Parks Maintenance Person performs skilled and unskilled manual duties of maintaining and caring for the recreation areas, athletic fields, parks and playgrounds. The Parks Maintenance Person will care for and maintain playground and parks equipment, general grounds, shrubs, brush, trees and other maintenance as required.

SALARY
Starting: $22.62 per hour, $47,045 annually
Annual increases up to $31.31 per hour, $65,121 annually
Additional credentials such as hoisting licenses (2A/1C) enhance qualification level and earning potential.

Responsibilities
- Operates vehicles, tractors, mowers and other on and off-road vehicles for the maintenance and care of park and recreation areas, equipment and general grounds upkeep.
- Ability to operate all types of hand tools, manual & power actuated shop equipment for the repair of parks & recreation equipment and facilities.
- Lines and stripes playing fields and maintenance athletic fields such as basketball courts, soccer, football, baseball and track fields.
- Plants, waters, prunes and removes shrubs and grass.
- Repairs fences, water fountains, drainage systems, swings, slides and other playground equipment.
- Performs painting, incidental carpentry and other maintenance or fabrication work.
- Performs related duties such as cleaning and picking up litter and debris, emptying trash and recycling receptacles, graffiti removal, and cleaning restrooms.
- Operates motor & power equipment for duties assigned.
- Participates in snow and ice removal operations, which may include operating a snowplow, snow-blower and/or hand shovel.
- Performs related work as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Valid driver’s license.
- At least one year of acceptable general or grounds maintenance work, including experience working both indoors and outdoors. Experience with landscaping, equipment operation, minor construction, or facility upkeep is highly relevant.
- Ability to safely operate a range of equipment including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, snow‑removal equipment, hand tools, and power tools. Basic mechanical aptitude for repairs to playground equipment, fencing, and other park structures.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; Ability to deal efficiently and effectively with the public and other employees.
- Work takes place across parks, athletic fields, playgrounds, wooded areas, and outdoor recreational facilities. Incumbent will regularly be exposed to noise, dust, pollen, chemicals used in grounds maintenance, and varying terrain.
- Work continues in all seasons, including rain, heat, cold, snow, and humidity. Snow and ice removal operations may occur during early mornings, nights, or weekends.
- Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.
- Work frequently involves collaboration with other Parks Division staff and interaction with members of the public using city facilities.
- Ability to walk long distances — sometimes over uneven or rocky terrain — throughout large parks and recreation areas. Ability to bend, kneel, crouch, climb, and stand for extended periods.
- Regular lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of materials and equipment up to 50 lbs. from ground to shoulder height. Occasional lifting of heavier items with assistance.
- Agility and coordination to safely operate landscaping equipment, snow‑removal tools, tractors, mowers, hand tools, and power‑actuated devices.
- Frequent use of hands for gripping tools, performing repairs, handling materials, and completing fine‑motor tasks such as painting, pruning, and equipment adjustments.
- Ability to work for extended durations in heat, cold, precipitation, and other outdoor conditions without diminished performance.
