The Airport Maintenance Technician is primarily responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the airfield, facilities, and equipment, the operation of a variety of light and heavy equipment, and routine manual labor tasks requiring considerable strength and endurance. Activities include but are not limited to: inspections; monitoring and oversight; plowing; mowing; airfield grounds and equipment maintenance; management of wildlife and vegetation; and operation of complex and heavy equipment.

Responsibilities
The incumbent works in various dynamic municipal buildings and locations. While performing the duties of the Airport Maintenance Technician, the incumbent is required to: interact and communicate frequently with the public, government officials, other staff members and boards, and/or third parties transacting business with the City. Work is performed both indoors and outdoors, subject to all weather conditions and extremes. Incumbent may be required to work at any time during the 24-hour day to respond to weather-related or emergency needs.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS (The physical demands listed here are representative of those that must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations are considered to ensure individuals with disabilities can perform essential functions.)
Physical ability and agility to climb ladders and enter confined spaces; walk long distance over uneven terrain; lift fifty (50) pounds from ground level to chest height in standing position; work in an aircraft operating environment; and work outdoors in all seasons.
HOURS
This position is classified as per‑diem and provides coverage during scheduled employee vacations, staffing shortages, or weather‑related emergencies such as snow events. Hours will vary based on operational needs, and shifts may be assigned with limited notice depending on conditions.
Salary
$26.49 per hour

Responsibilities
- Perform airfield inspections to ensure full compliance with FAA regulations, advisory materials, directives, and orders. Inspections include identifying, preventing, and removing aviation hazards such as FOD, wildlife, and other obstructions.
- Issue and record NOTAMs in accordance with established procedures.
- Monitor and support daily construction activities to ensure operational safety in all movement and non‑movement areas.
- Oversee fueling operations for safety compliance; report and support cleanup of any spills.
- Maintain and monitor the physical security of airport gates, fencing, and access points.
- Limit wildlife ingress and conduct wildlife management and removal within the airfield perimeter, consistent with applicable plans and permits.
- Assist in coordinating Snow Removal Team operations as directed by airport management and in accordance with the airport’s snow plan.
- Support vegetation management and enforcement of airport security requirements and operating rules.
- Safely and efficiently operate a wide range of heavy, specialized, and complex equipment (e.g., plows, tractors, backhoes, loaders, skid steers, forklifts, generators, and similar machinery).
- Operate landscaping equipment and hand tools such as mowers, trimmers, chainsaws, blowers, pressure washers, and snow removal tools.
- Perform light maintenance, servicing, and upkeep of airport maintenance equipment, including fluid checks, lubrication, cleaning, implement changes, and replacement of wear items.
- Conduct light maintenance and basic upkeep of airport facilities.
- Maintain airfield lighting, signage, and related equipment (e.g., bulb replacement, minor repairs).
- Maintain Snow Removal Equipment (SRE) and the maintenance facility in a clean, organized condition.
- Order and track maintenance supplies in coordination with airport management.
- Perform general labor and support tasks such as loading/unloading equipment, asphalt spreading, trenching, sign installation, snow shoveling, brush trimming, mowing, leaf removal, and similar operational duties.
- Perform all other duties and related work as required or as assigned.
- High school education or equivalent.
- Two years of acceptable experience (preferably airport experience) operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, loaders, backhoes, bulldozers, tree removal equipment, trailers, or other construction and agricultural equipment.
- Ability to meet Pittsfield Municipal Airport’s FAA standards for conducting day and night airfield inspections, reporting, and NOTAM’s and conducting inspections and reporting on a regular basis.
- Ability to operate two-way radio communications equipment in an airport operating environment.
- Working knowledge of motorized construction and agriculture equipment operation, maintenance, accessory tools, capabilities, and limitations and considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions in operating equipment in this class.
- Electrical experience (electrician's license a plus).
- Ability to obtain and maintain required licenses and certifications, including:
- Massachusetts FID or LTC
- Massachusetts Class D driver’s license (unless CDL is held)
- Class A or B CDL with Air Brake endorsement
- Hoisting Licenses (1A, 1B, 1C, 1D)
- Excavator Licenses (2A, 2B, 2C)
- Specialty Side Boom Mower License (4G)
- Ability to pass and maintain DOT medical certification and DOT drug testing requirements.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to maintain professional, positive interactions in all circumstances.
- Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions, including those of a technical nature.
