- Supervise Assigned Personnel: Supervise staff, including setting performance expectations and standards; prioritizing and assigning work; allocating staff; writing and conducting performance evaluations; ensuring staff is trained; coaching, mentoring, and counseling employees; ensuring staff compliance with departmental and City policies and procedures; and maintaining safe work environment. In coordination with the Wastewater Operations Superintendent and Human Resources, review and update job descriptions; participate in the hiring and selection of staff for open positions; and ensure the timely documentation and disciplining of employees consistent with Human Resources policies.
- Administer Wastewater Repair Functions: Plan, schedule, supervise, direct, and perform the repair, rehabilitation, and restoration of the City’s wastewater system. Utilize work management system to create, complete, and close out work orders, as well as track and record daily work activities. Operate and supervise the operation of specialized equipment such as backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, air compressor jackhammers, and concrete saws. Perform above ground visual inspections as well as inspections using specialized and highly technical equipment such as ground-penetrating radar, camera systems, sonde units, smoke tests, and dye tests to determine current conditions and needed repairs to correct wastewater lines with dilapidated conditions below grades. Enter manholes and trenches with proper safety equipment to repair wastewater lines and manholes. Raise manholes to grade. Install new line segments and new manholes. Clear rights-of-ways for access to wastewater mains for maintenance or repairs. Perform creek crossing inspections and cleaning of creek crossings as needed. Proficient in confined space entry and trenching and shoring operations. Prepare and submit reports of work activities. Apply for and obtain South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) encroachment permits as required. Attend required meetings and trainings including taking a lead role in such meetings when necessary.
- Ensure Workplace Safety: Proactively identify, remove and/or report potential safety hazards. Take steps to address, remove, or report hazardous conditions or items. Comply with City, state, and federal safety procedures and protocols in the performance of job duties. Ensure equipment and property safety. Conduct weekly safety meetings with crew and submit a report of each meeting.
- Lead Inclement Weather Operations: Take a lead role in the City’s operations during inclement weather. May be responsible for providing supervision and direction to other departmental personnel. Operate sanders and snow plows. Clean up sidewalks.
- Participate During On-Call Hours: Participate in after-hours on-call duty as an On-call Supervisor requiring working after normal hours and holidays to resolve emergency situations.
Qualifications
Job Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Over four (4) years of experience in wastewater repair and maintenance.
- Must have/obtain trenching/shoring certification and confined space certification within six months of employment.
- FEMA training and certifications ICS 100, ICS 200, IS 552, ICS 700, and ICS 800 within three (3) months of hire.
- Over two (2) years of experience in a lead worker capacity.
- Valid South Carolina Class B Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) within three (3) weeks of hire, or the equivalent CLP from their state of residence.
- Valid South Carolina Class B CDL with air brake provision and tanker endorsement within three (3) months of hire, or the equivalent CDL from their state of residence.
- Please be advised: Applicants who do not intend to relocate to South Carolina, must reside in a neighboring state (Georgia or North Carolina) and must meet the same CDL requirements as residents of South Carolina. In addition, employees residing in a neighboring state are required to provide to the City of Greenville an annual Motor Vehicle Record from their state’s Department of Motor Vehicles at the sole cost of the employee.

- Utilize a variety of communications and interpersonal skills to interact successfully with people at several levels inside and/or outside the organization.
- Work in inclement weather conditions (e.g., cold, heat, rain, wind, snow, sleet, etc.).
- Read technical journals and manuals, as well as regulations and policies.
- Write reports and compose emails in a clear and professional manner.
- Operate dump trucks, front end loader, tamp, concrete saw, jack hammer, chainsaw, gas detector, concrete mixer, pumps, and hand tools.
- Operate general office equipment to include scanner, printer, copier, telephone, calculator, smart tablet, and computer with Microsoft Office Suite.
- Utilize specialized software and systems to include work management system and mapping system.
