ABOUT THIS POSITION


The Parks and Recreation Department provides residents and visitors more than 41,000 acres of desert parks and mountain preserves. The parks feature 41 trailheads and more than 200 miles of trails, and 185 city parks. Additionally, there are 32 community and recreation centers, classes, and sports programs for all ages, 29 pools, eight golf courses, and a variety of specialty and cultural venues and facilities.

This role is responsible for providing recreational programming or facility coordination services for recreation programs. Responsibilities include planning, organizing, scheduling, coordinating, and implementing recreational activities, events, and classes based on the recreational needs of the community. As well as preparing and promoting recreational activities for the assigned site. In addition to recreation programs the Recreation Programmer will hold supervisor duties of part-time recreation employees such as Recreation Leaders, Recreation Instructors, and Parks and Recreation Aides and volunteers.

IDEAL CANDIDATE

  • Relevant teaching experience and/or leadership skills are strongly preferred.
  • Experience planning, developing and managing recreation programs and sports leagues.
  • Proficiency in computer programs such as MS Office.

SALARY


Pay Range: $22.08 - $34.25 per hour.

Hiring Range: $22.08 - $25.56 per hour.

  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.

Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 342. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.

  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate's degree in recreation, leisure studies, or area of recreational specialization.
  • One year of recreation experience.
  • Other combinations of education and experience which meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • Candidates who receive a conditional offer of employment must be fingerprinted and will have their fingerprints used to check the Criminal History Records of the State of Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Any records returned will be reviewed to determine the candidate's suitability for the job.
  • This position requires the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS


The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

  • Two plus years of experience marketing programs, classes, and sports leagues.
  • Two plus years of experience in financial management and cash handling.
  • Two plus years of experience in planning and managing recreation programs and sports leagues.
  • Two plus years of experience in supervising staff and volunteers.
  • Two plus years of experience in working special events.
  • Two plus years of experience in working with community groups and developing partnerships.
  • Two plus years of experience in the evaluation of recreation programs and staff.
  • Experience working with Microsoft 365, or other software programs.
  • Experience with web-based registration procedures and reports.
