About This Position

The Public Works Department strives to improve the quality of life in Phoenix through the efficient delivery of outstanding solid waste, fleet, facilities, and energy management services.

The City of Phoenix seeks qualified candidates for the Equipment Operator II position. This position performs a variety of manual and semi-skilled tasks associated with the delivery and repair of refuse containers. Employees are responsible for the receipt and inventory of all containers and associated parts and operating equipment necessary in the delivery, disposal and repair of containers. The Equipment Operator II works outdoors in a variety of weather conditions exposed to the elements.

Equipment Operated Includes

  • Pickup, dump, and flatbed trucks.
  • Vans, and trailers.

Work Ordinarily Follows An Established Routine And May Include

  • Clerical and warehouse inventory duties in addition to equipment operation.
  • Equipment troubleshooting, scrubber operations, and fuel spill cleanup.

The Ideal Candidate Possess

The ability to:

  • Read street maps.
  • Exercise good judgment when working unsupervised in the field and when providing direction to lower classifications.

SALARY

Pay Range: $21.97 to $32.46 per hour.

Hiring Range: $21.97 to $28.04 per hour.

Pay Range Explanation

  • Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
  • Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
  • Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
  • Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
  • Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
  • When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

Minimum Qualifications

  • (1) Completion of a departmental training course for the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators II.
  • OR (2) be qualified for "out-of-class" pay as an Equipment Operator II.
  • OR (3) log 120 hours on equipment similar to that used in the specific division.
  • OR (4) have a minimum of two years of experience operating commercial equipment under two tons, on the same or related type of equipment used by Equipment Operators II in the specific division.
  • All finalists for positions are subject to a criminal background check applicable to the department or position.
  • These positions require the use of personal or City vehicles on City business. Individuals must be physically capable of operating the vehicles safely, possess a valid driver's license and have an acceptable driving record. Use of a personal vehicle for City business will be prohibited if the employee is not authorized to drive a City vehicle or if the employee does not have personal insurance coverage.

Work And Environmental Conditions Requirements

  • Working irregular hours, second and/or third shifts, weekends, holidays, and evenings may be required.
  • Moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be required.
  • Working outside in a variety of environmental extremes such as heat, cold, rain, air pollution, and dust.
  • Safely perform manual labor including moving, lifting, loading and unloading refuse and recycling containers.

Preferred Qualifications

The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:

One year of experience operating light duty equipment, including box truck with lift gate operations, 5th wheel truck and trailer combination, water trailer, and/or other vehicles.

Experience With

  • 2-way radio communications and other wireless devices.
  • Working in streets, traffic, and around the public.
  • Using established routes in the metro area.
  • Documenting work effectively.
  • Completing a set production standard for routed deliveries and customer requests.
  • Providing excellent customer service to residents, solid waste staff and various City Departments.
  • Communicating with supervision orally, in written form, one-on-one and in group settings on a professional level.
  • Driving and operating:
    • A delivery truck daily through various parts of the City.
    • Specialized light duty equipment.
