The City of Pasadena - Public Health Department has an immediate opening for an experienced Environmental Health professional to perform health inspections and investigations involving enforcement and interpretation of environmental health laws and regulations.

The ideal candidate must possess a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California and will have a background as a generalist in Environmental Health. About the Department

For over 125 years, the Pasadena Public Health Department has been responsible for helping protect, maintain and improve the health of the Pasadena community. The City of Pasadena is one of only three cities in the State of California that maintains its own independent local health jurisdiction with responsibility for a wide variety of services that support the three core functions of assessment, policy development and assurance.

The major responsibilities of this position are listed below. Assignments may vary. For more detailed information, please refer to the Environmental Health Specialist job description.

  • Inspects and investigates environmental health conditions for compliance with sanitation and public health laws and regulations including food facilities, swimming pools, health spas, hotels and motels, schools and special events; checks for and determines significant variances from approved conditions in matters such as temperature of food, equipment design, ventilation, lighting, structural design and sanitation; recommends corrective measures; issues inspection reports, notices to correct and permits.
  • Investigates complaints from the public related to environmental health problems; conducts epidemiological surveys in suspected cases of food, water or vector borne illnesses; investigates health complaints related to or resulting from rodents, flies, fleas, roaches, and other insects; investigates complaints related to the City's smoking and noise ordinances.
  • Advises business owners, architects, engineers, builders, employees and the public on interpretation and conformity to applicable laws and regulations; gives out educational materials.
  • Reviews and makes recommendations to architects, engineers, owners, manufacturers and builders on building plans and equipment design; conducts construction site inspections for conformity with related laws and regulations.
  • Coordinates enforcement activities and maintains liaison with City enforcement agencies; assists other City staff in the enforcement of housing code violations for multiple family dwellings.
  • Gathers, prepares, and presents legal evidence and testimony in court proceedings.
  • Prepares reports and correspondence; enters inspection and investigation data into the division's inspection database system.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • 18 months of experience comparable to that of an Assistant Environmental Health Specialist with the City of Pasadena or one year experience comparable to that of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist with a public agency.
  • Possession of a valid certificate of registration as an Environmental Health Specialist issued by the State of California is required.

SELECTION PROCESS

The selection process will consist of any combination of application evaluation, written exam, oral panel interview, department interview and may be required to complete a brief soft-skills assessment during the selection process. Salary : $82,988 - $103,734
