This position is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the city’s water storage and pump station systems. An incumbent in this position may be designed “Operator B”, “Operator A”, or “Operator Trainee.”

The Water Storage and Pump Station Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Years Of Service Completed Annual Leave Cap Available
less than 5 years: 152 hours
5 to 9 years: 176 hours
10 to 14 years: 200 hours
15 to 19 years: 224 hours
20 years: 248 hours
PTO begins accruing immediately. At the end of the year, any unused annual leave will roll over to the next year. Time will be accrued bi-weekly and shown on each paycheck.
RETIREMENT: General employees are fully vested after 10 years of employment. Employees can become partially vested at five (5) years of service. Partial vesting at five (5) years is 50%, six (6) years 60%, seven (7) years 70%, eight (8) years 80%, and nine (9) years 90%. General Employees are eligible for normal retirement upon the earlier of reaching age 55 and the completion of 10 years of credited service or reaching age 50 and the completion of 20 years of credited service. HOLIDAYS: Employees receive 14 holidays per year. The holidays are:

Examples of Duties
- Monitors, maintains, and operates water storage and pumping stations.
- Performs water system sampling and bacteriological testing.
- Maintains plant records, including operational logs, daily sheets, and daily, weekly, and monthly logs.
- Performs plant maintenance, including greasing pumps and motors.
- Installs and maintains sample stations.
- Monitors incoming water quality and system pressure.
- Checks chlorine residuals and PH throughout the distribution system.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies when on-call.
- Maintains chemical inventory and reorders as needed.
- Responds to and resolves customer complaints.
- Performs weekly and monthly fire hydrant flushing.
- Operates generators as needed.
- Performs related duties.
- Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
- Possession of a Class C Drinking Water Treatment Plant Operator License.
- Ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Florida for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
- Trainee – Must have high school diploma/GED or vocational school; must be able to read and write; should have some experience as a laborer in the operation of similar facilities, or similar experience in the maintenance of motors, pumps and related equipment; must be familiar with computers. In training for Class C Water Treatment Operator’s Certificate issued by the State of Florida DEP.
- Operator C – Must have high school diploma/GED or vocational school; must be able to read and write effectively in a technical environment; must have at least five (5) years of experience in the operation of similar facilities; must be capable of using, or learning, MS Word and MS Excel software, and performing routine data entry; must have Class C Water Treatment Operator’s certification issued by the State of Florida; must have knowledge of regulations, safety standards and occupational hazards associated with job.
- Operator B – Must have high school diploma/GED or vocational school; must be able to read and write effectively in a technical environment; must have at least five (5) years of experience in the operation of similar facilities; must be capable of using, or learning, MS Word and MS Excel software, and performing routine data entry; must have Class B Water Treatment Operator’s certification issued by the State of Florida; must have knowledge of regulations, safety standards and occupational hazards associated with job.
