What are the responsibilities and job description for the Equipment Operator - Civil Service List Creation - Public Works position at CITY OF OTTUMWA?
The Equipment Operator is a full time position operating a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair and maintenance and replacement of City infrastructure. They will also be performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance work.
The Equipment Operator in Public Works Departments (Streets, Sewer, Traffic) will also be required to operate snow equipment during weather events. This may require overtime on nights and weekends (as needed)
The successful candidate will possess the following:
Education/Training/Certifications
- High School diploma required
- Possess and maintain valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License

- If not currently held, must obtain within six months of employment (dependent on availability of training program)
- Must have one (1) year of experience in heavy equipment operation in the construction industry
Knowledge, skills and abilities
- Working knowledge of the principles and practices of operating and servicing specialized maintenance and construction equipment
- Knowledge of safe working practices, safety data sheets, air-monitoring equipment, and ability to detect potential hazards
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
