What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Worker I / II (Water Division) position at City of Oakdale?
This is a banded series in the Maintenance Worker family, performing apprentice, journey, and skilled advanced journey level work in the operation of the respective division. Performs related work as required.
Maintenance Worker I
There are three possible divisions in which the Maintenance Worker I may work - the Water Division, Streets/Sewer Division, or Parks Division. The below listed duties are not all-encompassing but are designed to serve as a guide of some typical duties the position would perform, depending on the division in which they work.
- Performs basic maintenance, repair, construction and installation work.
- Digs holes, trenches, and ditches using picks, shovels, jack hammers, spades, cultivating forks, post hole diggers and other tools: loads, unloads, shovels, and rakes sand, gravel, dirt, fertilizer, loam, asphalt, and other materials.
- Maintains awareness of safety procedures and practice on work assignments.
- Cleans and flushes sewers and catch basins; removes debris from sewer and gutters.
- Prepares/finish trenches for water and sewer installation.
- Ability to operate/maintain hand tools, power tools and motorized equipment.
- Maintains, replaces, and repairs infrastructures.
- Measures, cuts and threads pipe.
- Cleans and monitors pump stations and related equipment.
- Maintains daily log.
- Makes minor adjustments on service equipment.
- Repairs, maintains, and installs water meters and related water service lines.
- Performs general carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing and mechanical work in building maintenance.
- Performs related duties as required.
- Participates in the repair of sewer lines, checking of sanitary sewers, laying of sewer pipes, and installation of sewer connections.
- Performs labor in the planting, cultivating, trimming, removing, watering, and spraying of lawns, plants and other vegetation.
- Mows and trims lawns, rakes leaves, hoes weeds, clears paths and trails, empties trash containers, cleans equipment, structures, and facilities, such as courts, swimming pools, park grounds, restrooms and work areas.
- Performs labor in the erecting of tree supports, building of park benches, barbeque pits, retaining walls and other items.
- Sets up cones and barricades for traffic and safety control, may perform as a flag person.
- Lifts heavy weights.
- Uses tools such as air spades, tampers, picks, shovels, hoes, rakes, pruning shears, rototillers, trimmers, shears, edgers, loppers, pruners and other items.
Maintenance Worker II
There are three possible divisions in which the Maintenance Worker II may work - the Water Division, Streets/Sewer Division, or Parks Division. Within the Parks Division, there is a specific Maintenance Worker II who is primarily assigned to maintain T.L. Davis Sports Complex, Gregor Sports Park, and Oakdale Community Park, and works directly under a Senior Maintenance Worker. The below listed duties are not all-encompassing but are designed to serve as a guide of some typical duties the position would perform, depending on the division in which they work.
- Perform semi-skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and installation work of streets, parking lots, and other paved surfaces.
- Perform a wide variety of semi-skilled tasks such as cleaning catch basins and plugged sewers; repairing and unplugging sewer laterals, mains and storm drains; repairing and replacing water lines; repairing and patching street surfaces; and installing and repairing chain link fences.
- Drive and operate pickup trucks, dump trucks, light flatbed trucks, chippers, forklifts, mowers, and related light vehicles.
- Maintain awareness of safety procedures and practices them on work assignments.
- Spray trees and weeds; aerate lawns.
- Prepare/finish trenches for water and sewer installation.
- Operate and maintain hand tools, power tools, and motorized equipment.
- Maintain, replace, and repair water and sewer lines.
- Measure, cut, and thread pipe.
- Install and repair sprinkler lines and irrigation systems.
- Clean and monitor pump stations and related equipment.
- Perform emergency repairs to water, sewer, and drainage systems.
- Set up traffic control devices at work sites on the streets.
- Maintain daily log.
- Make minor adjustments on service equipment.
- Assist in other areas of public works/park operations.
- Repair, maintain, and install water meters and related water service lines.
- Perform general carpentry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and mechanical work in building maintenance.
- If assigned to the Sports Parks, shall have general working knowledgeable of turf management, fertigation/injection systems, and fertilizer.
- Performs related duties as required.

- Operate specialized and motorized equipment used in public works, parks, and facility maintenance work.
- Read, understand, and implement schematic diagrams and blueprints.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Maintenance Worker I
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); one-year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Maintenance Worker II
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); two-year’s related experience preferably as a maintenance Worker I with the City; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Maintenance Worker I
- Valid California driver’s license.
Maintenance Worker II
- Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
- Obtain a minimum of a Class B California driver’s license permit within 90 days of hire and the Class B license within one year of hire.
- Water distribution (D-1) certification required if specifically assigned to the Water Division.
- Sewer Collections (C-1) certification required if specifically assigned to the Street & Sewer Division.
