Description
This entry-level, seasonal position performs a variety of public works maintenance and repair tasks in support of all Public Works divisions. Duties include operating equipment, maintaining grounds, maintaining facilities, and caring for vehicles and equipment. Employees are expected to follow all safety procedures; wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), and maintain timely communication with their supervisor. This position supports Public Works operations during the peak summer season, typically from April to September
Essential Job Functions
Work activities involve multiple skills and may include, but are not limited to, any of the following, depending on the area of assignment, crew needs, emergency services, special projects, and seasonal factors:
Responsible for cleaning, painting, and maintaining City-owned grounds, streets, facilities, and equipment.
Operate various mowers, edger and weed eaters.
Operate hand and power tools.
Surface preparation of metal rails, building surfaces, and painting.
Water grass areas and planters, hand weeding.
Clean wastewater equipment.
Drive the City truck to collect and transport wastewater samples.
Operate vehicles up to 1-ton.
Assist with traffic control.
Wash and wax City vehicles.
Move and handle more than 50-pound bags.
Follow proper safety instructions.
Wash windows and other miscellaneous tasks as required.
Possible exposure to obnoxious materials while using required safety gear, which will be provided by the City.
Performance Requirements (Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities):
To perform this job successfully, an individual must satisfactorily perform each essential duty. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Knowledge of safe operation of hand and power tools and equipment.
Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
Ability to work independently but remain a member of the Public Works team.
Ability to work weekends, evenings, and holidays if needed.
Ability to follow detailed instructions.
Ability to complete duties in an effective and timely manner.
Qualifications & Requirements
An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential job functions may be considered.
High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
Must pass a Criminal Background and Drivers Abstract check prior to hire.
Valid State Driver's License and a good driving record to be maintained during the course of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity working with equipment such as power tools, mowers, and weed eaters.
Experience working outside during inclement weather.

Work is primarily performed outdoors, with occasional office work, and requires exposure to adverse weather conditions, high noise levels, heavy traffic, noxious chemicals, and other hazardous conditions. Work requires manual dexterity, hearing, and visual acuity, and the ability and stamina to perform heavy manual labor; to crawl, climb, bend, twist, stoop, kneel, operate equipment, and perform repetitive moving of items in excess of 50 pounds, and to maintain such activities throughout a work shift. Work may involve risk of exposure to hazardous chemicals or bloodborne pathogens.
