What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Locator position at City of North Miami?
A Utility Locator identifies, locates, and marks the location of City of North Miami subsurface utilities to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction excavation activities and to comply with the Underground Facilities Damage Prevention and Safety Act, Chapter 556, Florida Statutes.
The Utility Locator class is distinguished by its full-time responsibility for locating underground utilities, where accuracy of the marks is crucial. This class may be subject to emergency call-out and stand-by and must be willing to work overtime as required.Perform locations of the City’s water distribution and wastewater collection system and appurtenances.
Operate necessary electronic and manual equipment needed to accomplish daily duties associated with the locating of water distribution and wastewater collection system and appurtenances.
Accurately document work performed, and facilities located, including written and electronic reports, as may be required.
Identify any errors and/ or omissions in the department’s base map and/ or hard copy records and provide accurate information to correct the records.
May be required to dig through potholes, etc. to locate underground assets.
Prepares written documents verifying marked utilities after damages to City facilities and expedites claims for utility repairs.
Does related work as required.Must possess a High School Diploma or G.E.D. Plus one (1) year experience with utility locates. A comparable amount of training, education or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Possession of a valid Florida driver’s license required.Knowledge of safe work techniques and practices while working in Public Rights-of-Way.
Knowledge of the methods, materials and equipment used to locate underground utilities.
Ability to interpret drawings and blueprints.
Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision.
Ability to establish and maintain effective communications and working relationships with supervisors, coworkers, contractors, and the public.
Ability to manually access utility appurtenances such as valve boxes, water meters, and wastewater manhole lids.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle.
Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
