The City of Norfolk’s Department of Human Services (NDHS) provides a wide range of essential services to its citizens. These services are crucial in supporting the wellbeing of the community and ensuring that all citizens have access to the resources they need. The NDHS is seeking a Self-Sufficiency Specialist II for the Self-Sufficiency unit to help individuals and communities become more self-reliant and sustainable. We promote economic independence through assistance with job searches, job development, educational and vocational opportunities, and alleviating barriers to entering and remaining in the workforce.
The Self-Sufficiency Specialist II assesses needs, develops, and implements programs, provides training and education, coordinates resources, and evaluates outcomes. They may also work with government agencies, non-profit organizations, or private companies to promote self-sufficiency initiatives.
Department Hiring Salary Range: $54,190 - $62,185
Essential functions include but are not limited:- Administers and conducts assessment results to include career interests, aptitudes, abilities and employability. Provides in-depth employment and supportive counseling as needed. Updates employability plans. Performs re-assessments at prescribed intervals to ensure satisfactory progress.
- Administers resource management by providing resource updates, conducts job recruitment, coaching and vocational enrollment.
- Manages the delivery of employment and training services.
- Facilitates and instructs Job Readiness classes, community presentations, orientations, and course curriculums.
- Conducts interviews, reviews, and evaluates information from participants for continued program eligibility.
- Manages a caseload of approximately 60-90 or more individuals.
- Clarifies regulations by interpreting policies, explaining rules and responsibilities for self-sufficiency reform programs, and providing coaching skills to help customers make a smooth transition to self-sufficiency.
- Works collaboratively with other employees and the public to ensure that each customer is served efficiently and effectively.
- Serves as a mentor and assists with training of new workers as required.
- Maintains and analyzes program results and prepares required program outcome reports.
Work requires education or training beyond high school graduation or equivalency which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of advanced study or training.
