NOTE: This position may require shift work including afternoons and weekends and overtime as needed.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is difficult mechanical maintenance and supervisory work performed in the Citys automotive repair facilities. The incumbent acts as service manager and performs and supervises the repair and maintenance of a variety of City-owned automotive and specialized heavy
motor equipment. General supervision is received from the Director of Public Works and/or Deputy Director of Public Works. Direct supervision is exercised over Senior Automotive Mechanics, Automotive Mechanics, skilled and unskilled maintenance workers as assigned, Storekeepers and assigned clerical staff. The Chief of Automotive performs related work as required.
Typical Work Activities
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and six (6) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive and mechanical equipment including heavy equipment such as tractors, bulldozers, construction machinery, and street cleaning equipment, two (2) years of which must have been in a supervisory capacity.

Typical Work Activities
- Acts as service manager and plans, assigns, supervises and inspects the work of employees engaged in repairing city-owned automobiles, trucks, and a variety of heavy construction equipment
- Instructs workers in methods to be used when repairing motor equipment
- Checks time and work of subordinates so as to keep cost at a minimum
- Requisitions tools, accessories and repair parts
- Determines proper corrective action for repairs
- Assists the Senior Mechanic and Automotive Mechanics in repair and maintenance of equipment, and personally performs difficult and complex maintenance and repair work
- Composes detailed specifications for purchase of all heavy-duty and light-duty vehicles and compares specifications with new vehicles upon delivery
- Provides detailed labor and parts reports to Niagara Falls Water Board for monthly billing
- Maintains New Road computerized fueling stations unleaded and diesel tanks that provide fuel for all City, Water Board and Niagara County vehicles
- Works closely with Law Department when City-owned vehicles are involved in an accident or sustain damage
- Obtains a minimum of two estimates for repair
- Maintains records and coordinates repairs with related departments
- Coordinates and processes all vehicle recall notices for repairs
- Maintains spare key box and cuts keys for all City vehicles
- Cuts lettering and numbers and installs labeling on City cars and trucks.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND
- Thorough knowledge of automobiles, trucks and heavy equipment of the types used by the City
- Thorough knowledge of hydraulic and electrical systems as applied to automotive equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the servicing, repair and maintenance requirements of heavy and specialized automotive equipment
- Good knowledge of modern testing devices used in automotive repair work
- Exceptional mechanical ability and skill in diagnosing mechanical troubles in automotive equipment supervisory ability;
- Ability to interpret drawings, diagrams and specifications
- Ability to maintain accurate cost records; ability to prepare detailed labor and parts reports
