Any equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the duties as, described. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and experience would be: Knowledge of basic water safety.
KNOWLEDGE: Knowledge of basic office equipment, including computer, copier, fax, and phone. Knowledge of Lifeguard techniques, philosophies, and behaviors that are conducive to ensuring a safe aquatic environment. Knowledge of supplies and equipment, basic rules and skills involved in a variety of aquatic programs. Knowledge of techniques in overseeing various aquatic and other recreational activities. Knowledge of the philosophy, and objectives of the recreation profession, and the purpose, use, and benefit of various elements of specific programs. Knowledge of basic swimming and swim instruction skills, basic water safety, and swim instruction.
SKILLS: Adequate swimming and water skills, skills in using typical rescue equipment, skill in the use of personal computers, various related software programs, standard office equipment, swimming pool equipment. Strong customer service skills. Basic water safety skills. Exceptional interpersonal skills, strong oral and written communications skills with a variety of audiences. Strong reasoning, analysis, and problem solving skills combined with excellent judgment and professionalism.
ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain an effective and professional working relationship with City management, supervisors, employees, Council members, other entities, and the public. Ability to communicate effectively and professionally, both orally and in writing, with individual and groups. Ability to honor the confidentiality required of this position. Ability to perform the rescue skills and first aid skills required in the job. Ability to multi-task in a busy environment. Ability to communicate and interact with a variety of people; be self-motivated, and carry assignments through to completion. Ability to use discretion and work independently and in a teamwork environment. Attention to detail in all aspects of the job. Ability to remain alert for long periods. Ability to work a consistent and reliable schedule. Follow all safety rules and procedures for work areas.
Physical ability to perform the essential job functions. Must have the physical strength and endurance necessary to rescue a struggling victim in the water. Required to possess the visual and hearing acuity necessary to detect and rescue a struggling victim in the water.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Certifications in CPR/ First Aid within 30 days of hire.
Lifeguard certification within 30 days of hire.
Knowledge of basic water safety at time of hire.
Blood Borne Pathogen training required within 30 days of hire.
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must have the physical strength and endurance necessary to rescue a struggling victim in the water. Required to possess the visual and hearing acuity necessary to detect and rescue a struggling victim in the water.
WORKING CONDITIONS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work location is primarily indoors where most of work period occurs in a recreational/swimming pool setting. Working conditions will vary, depending on assigned programs and will involve considerable exposure to humidity, water, and an environment where chemicals may be present. Must wear uniform and proper footwear while on duty.
