What You’ll Do

As a Community Resource Officer with the Newport Police Department, you will support public safety through a balance of independent work, collaboration, and community engagement. You’ll serve as a visible and trusted presence while carrying out responsibilities that strengthen community partnerships and support departmental operations.

  • Work independently with limited direct supervision while also taking direction from supervisory staff and aligning work with departmental priorities
  • Conduct investigations related to municipal code and ordinance violations, including follow-up, documentation, and coordination as needed
  • Prepare clear, accurate, and timely reports, citations, and related records
  • Serve as a Municipal Court Bailiff by providing courtroom security, assisting court staff, and supporting the orderly administration of court proceedings
  • Engage with community members, businesses, and visitors to provide information, education, and problem-solving support related to public safety concerns
  • Participate in special projects and community outreach efforts, including community fairs, school events, and educational programs
  • Represent the Police Department in a professional, approachable, and service-oriented manner at public events and meetings
  • Support community-oriented policing initiatives that promote trust, safety, and positive relationships
  • Perform related duties as assigned in support of department goals and community needs

Example Of Duties And/or Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS: Some higher education/vocational training in employment dealing with the public or equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE: City ordinances and code enforcement procedures. Civil procedure pertaining to code and ordinance violations.

SKILLS: Demonstrate knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet applications. Operate a personal computer and have a basic knowledge of e-mail, word processing programs, and spreadsheet applications. Learn and apply operating policies, procedures and methods of the Police Department. Prepare accurate written reports.

ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective and appropriate working relationships with the general public, co-workers, other governmental agency representatives, and city officials. Ability to hear and understand communication via the police radio. Ability to prioritize and respond quickly to changing circumstances; work under pressure; meet deadlines; and communicate effectively in writing and orally.

Special Requirements/Licenses

Possess a valid Oregon Driver's License at time of hire.

Obtain certification in LEDS at the Inquiry level within 70 days of hire.

Physical Demands

Work is conducted in an office setting as well as outdoors, with exposure to wind and rain. Attendance at evening meetings may be required. Frequent use of motorized equipment/vehicles.

The City of Newport offers a generous employee benefits package. : The standard package for non-management staff includes 12 days a year of paid vacation (non-management exempt level staff includes 18 days a year), and 12 paid days of sick leave in the first full year of employment; eleven paid designated holidays and three paid selectable holidays; medical, vision, and dental insurance coverage (10% employee premium participation), City retirement plan with available match. Free membership to the City's Recreation and Aquatic Facility. Benefits may vary by contract.
