Performs difficult skilled work in the regular operation of heavy and complex automotive and construction equipment; does related work as required. Work is performed under general supervision. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate equipment operators and other crew members.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Operating heavy equipment in construction, maintenance and repair projects.(The following tasks are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) Operates grader, dozer, front-end loader, back-hoe, street sweeper, leaf machine. Operates scraper and tractor-trailer, dump truck, small boom truck. Operates track hoe and trencher; excavates work sites. Performs preventative maintenance tasks on equipment; inspects equipment for safety prior to operating. Lubricates and checks off, fluid levels, hoses, hydraulic systems and makes minor adjustments as necessary. Operates, services and maintains equipment at composting facility. Directs trucks entering composting facility to proper location. Makes water and sewer line taps; troubleshoots, repairs and maintains lines; serves as backup operator in responsible charge. Performs repair and maintenance on traffic signals and signal cabinets. Loads and unloads heavy equipment on to tractor-trailer. Performs construction, maintenance and repair duties when not operating equipment. When not operating heavy equipment, operates lighter equipment or trains other operators. Participates in and conducts training on safety and equipment operation. Oversees and assigns work to crew members and assigned inmates; conducts performance evaluations on assigned crew members. Assists with snow removal and ice control. May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status. Performs related tasks as required.

Education and ExperienceAny combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and extensive experience in operation and maintenance of heavy motorized equipment.Special RequirementsPossession of an appropriate commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
