**General Definition of Work**
- Performs intermediate semiskilled work in the regular operation of medium automotive and construction equipment; does related work as required.
- Work is performed under regular supervision.
- Operating medium equipment in construction, maintenance and repair projects.
- Operates large tractor mower and tree cutter cutting vacant and overgrown lots, drainage ditch banks, road shoulders and electric right of ways.
- Operates equipment for processing and hauling wastewater sludge.
- Drives dump truck hauling rocks, dirt, wood and bricks.
- Operates front-end loader loading and unloading trucks.
- Operates street sweeper.
- Operates Cherry Picker, loading and unloading brown and white goods and debris from work sites; puts up banners and decorations.
- Operates asphalt patching equipment to repair and patch streets.
- Assists drainage maintenance crews; lays pipe in ditches and driveways.
- Helps with leaf collection; operates leaf machine; operates brush saw and chipper; feeds brush chipper to clean up brush and logs.
- Performs minor maintenance work on equipment.
- Inspects equipment for safety prior to operating; attends and participates in training sessions.
- Performs construction maintenance and repair tasks when not operating equipment.
- Performs a variety of tasks at landfill such as cutting and stacking wood and separating waste; collects soil samples.
- Assists with snow removal and ice control.
- May be required to work outside normal working hours in an emergency or stand-by status.
- Performs related tasks as required.
- General knowledge of the principles and practices of operating medium construction equipment
- General knowledge of the traffic laws and regulations governing equipment operation
- General knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary to the proper operation of varied construction and maintenance equipment
- Skill in the use of equipment to which assigned; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions
- Mechanical aptitude
- Ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates
- **Education and Experience**
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and some experience in operation and maintenance of medium motorized equipment.
- **Special Requirements **
- Must possess Class A commercial driver's license valid in the State of North Carolina.
- May require possession of pesticide/herbicide applicator's license depending on departmental assignment.
