Position Summary
The principal function of an employee in this class is to haul biosolids and assist in maintaining, services, and repairs a variety of mechanical, electrical, and electronic equipment at the City's Wastewater Plant to ensure safe and efficient plant operations. The work is performed under the supervision and direction of the maintenance supervisor, but considerable leeway is granted for the exercise of independent judgment and initiative. This class is distinguished from the class of WWTP Mechanic I by the primary functions of biosolids hauling. The nature of the work performed requires that an employee in this class establish and maintain effective working relationships with the assigned supervisor, other City employees, and the general public. The principal duties of this class are performed in a wastewater treatment plant environment, which included exposure to hazardous chemicals, extreme heights, and dangerous machinery.

Position Summary

Essential Functions
Biosolids
- Operates a semi-truck and trailer or dump truck to haul biosolids offsite.
- Conducts loading or moving biosolids.
- Collects biosolids samples.
- Maintains records of biosolids hauled such as hauling logs and volumes.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a loader, dump truck, tractor-trailer, backhoe, and other related equipment.
- Assists in a variety of complex repairs and troubleshooting of mechanical parts and equipment of the Wastewater Plant, including repairing pumps, boiler, blower, and other related equipment to maintain the flow process of the City's sewer system.
- Performs and has ability to train others on variety of preventive maintenance of plant equipment at scheduled time intervals as required, including checking belts, bearings, seal leaks, changing oil and lubricants, and repairing or replacing worn or damaged parts as necessary.
- Assists in fabrication of components for plant equipment and structures using a variety of shop tools and materials including Welders, cutters, power tools, hand tools and some machining equipment as necessary.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of all maintenance and repair activities, including maintaining records of work orders, used parts, stock items, and labor hours as required.
- Maintains an efficient inventory of necessary parts and equipment to ensure efficient plant operations and cost efficiency.
- Performs tests of equipment following maintenance and repairs to safe and efficient operation of equipment as required.
- Operates a variety of hand and power tools, and other maintenance related vehicles and equipment, including welder, cutting torch, backhoe, forklift, hydro cleaner truck, and other related as required.
- Performs a variety of basic plant operation activities as requested.
- Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees.
- Maintains a knowledge base on a variety of assigned plant equipment and/or its operation to provide Subject Matter Expert level support.
- Assumes responsibility for other duties as required or assigned.
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
- High School Graduate or General Education Degree (GED) required.
- Valid State Driver's License with Class A CDL; preferred overweight hauling experience.
- Must live with a thirty-minute response time from the wastewater treatment plant.
- Industrial maintenance experience - Preferred.
- Semi-Truck hauling experience.
- Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in the basic maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, Semi-Tucks & Trailers.
- Basic Knowledge of the methods, practices, tools, and materials used in mechanical maintenance and repair of water treatment plants.
- Basic Knowledge of the principles of operation of pumps, motors, and other related wastewater treatment equipment.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to mechanical and electrical maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of the necessary safety measures, precautions, and procedures that must be observed when working in a wastewater treatment plant.
- Knowledge of the necessary safety measures, precautions, and procedures that must be observed when hauling/driving on roadways.
- Basic Knowledge of plant layout and in-depth understanding of the principle of operational theory.
- Ability to work in physically demanding conditions.
- Ability to efficiently operate and repair wastewater service-related equipment as required, including hand and power tools, vehicle and related machines and equipment.
- Ability to efficiently perform required tasks from the direction of blueprints, diagrams, civil drawings, and sketches.
- Ability to efficiently perform accurate mathematical computations as required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with others, both orally and in writing, using both technical and non-technical language.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and/or written policies, procedures, and instructions, use logical and creative thought processes to develop solutions according to written specifications and/or oral instructions, and prepare and present accurate and reliable reports containing findings and recommendations.
- Ability to perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.
- Ability to operate or quickly learn to operate a personal computer using standard or customized software applications appropriate to assigned tasks and the ability and willingness to quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.
