Trades Worker Public Works
JOB SUMMARY
The purpose of this position is to perform regular and semi-skilled work in maintaining facilities and grounds for the City.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Ensures that construction, maintenance, and repair activities are in compliance with applicable laws, codes, regulations, and standards; conducts maintenance inspections of buildings, equipment, grounds, and facilities to identify potential problems, unsafe conditions, and needed repairs; and initiates any actions necessary to correct deviations or violations.
- Performs various tasks involving general building maintenance or construction projects; paints interior/exterior surfaces; cuts, solders, and/or welds metal pipes or parts; removes, repairs, and replaces floor/ceiling tile; cleans gutters; removes, repairs and replaces roofing materials; etc.
- Performs a variety of carpentry duties; constructs small buildings; builds and installs cabinets; etc.
- Performs a variety of landscaping duties; mows grass; plants flowers and shrubs; weed eats around signs and fence lines; edges curb lines; clears leaves, tree limbs and other debris from park areas; spreads and hauls ground cover, dirt, or mulch; sprays weed killer and fertilizer; prunes trees and shrubs; weeds flower beds; spreads grass seed; grooms ball fields; etc.
- Performs a skilled concrete finish work; builds forms and drain boxes; mixes concrete to proper consistency; pours and levels concrete; etc.
- Assists with special projects and seasonal work; installs and removes holiday decorations; installs and removes banners; spreads salt on City streets as needed; clears streets and sidewalks of debris following special events; and removes and replaces staging materials from sites as needed.
- Determines amount of materials needed to complete projects; gathers equipment, tools, parts, and supplies; monitors inventory levels; and initiates requests for new or replacement materials as required.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; and reports faulty equipment.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, the public, and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Prepares or completes various forms, reports, work orders, logs, accident reports, or other documents.
- Receives various forms, reports, work orders, application instructions or other documents; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
- Operates a variety of varied purpose equipment and tools in road, right-of-way, landscape, and utility maintenance; operates a motor-grader, scraper, excavator, compactor, front-end loader, track hoe, back hoe, tractor/trailer and lowboy, street sweeper, ice spreader, chipper truck, leaf truck, milling machine, paving machine, commercial-grade lawn mower, weed eater, chain saw, blower, shovel, rakes, pitchfork, Maddox, pry bar or other equipment.
- Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools in order to complete essential functions including the use of commercial-grade trucks and City vehicles.
ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS
- Attends meetings, workshops and training as necessary.
- Assists in preparing for and cleaning up after natural disasters as necessary.
- Performs other related duties as required, requested and assigned.
Education and Experience:
Requires a high school diploma or equivalent; two (2) years of experience in maintenance and manual labor work.
Licenses or Certifications:
Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The work is medium work. The employee is frequently required to apply 30 pounds of force to move objects. The employee is occasionally required to exert up to 50 pounds of force to move objects. Additionally requires: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, hearing voices and distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, manual dexterity, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, expressing ideas by the spoken word and shouting to be heard above ambient noise, visual acuity in data/color/observations/operating equipment/inspect defects or measurements, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work is performed both indoors and outdoors where performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, toxic agents, or disease. Work is performed in a dynamic environment that requires sensitivity to change and responsiveness to changing goals, priorities, and needs.
