FT – Police Class III Advanced Student Internship

JOB SUMMARY

The internship will provide students with an introductory level orientation into law enforcement.  

The internship will provide students with first steps into policing within the Myrtle Beach community as a Class III Advanced Officer and consist of providing students opportunities to train and experience different facets of the department and community policing. The first phase of the program will include intensive training for certification both classroom and hands-on. The second phase, will include field-work assigned to a Class I officer working within the community with active interactions, on a regular schedule.  


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. Other duties may be required and assigned.
  • Class III Advanced Officers in this position may perform the following duties while in “proximate contact” with a Class I Certified Law Enforcement Officer. For the purpose of this job description, “proximate contact” means within sight and/or radio contact with a Class I Certified on-duty Law Enforcement Officer who is in a position to respond immediately to their location. 
  • Answers non-emergency, not in progress calls for service including but not limited to: domestic disputes, abuse, assaults, burglaries, thefts, property damage, public service duties, found property, and civil issues.
  • Responds to complaints and questions related to law enforcement issues and activities; mediates disputes; provides information, advice, and guidance; takes and relays messages and/or directs calls to appropriate personnel; returns communication as necessary; provides referrals for additional public and private resources, including the civil court system.
  • Researches problems and initiates problem resolution; answers the telephone, e-mail, and receives visitors in person.
  • Enforces all applicable codes, ordinances, laws and regulations in order to protect life and property, prevent crime, and promote security.
  • Writes citations; arrests and processes offenders as appropriate; assists in booking inmates into jail; processes evidence.
  • Conducts preliminary and advanced investigations; obtains warrants; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gathers information and evidence; prepares investigative reports and sketches; participates in court activities; testifies in judicial proceedings.)
  • Inspects and maintains assigned uniform, weapons, and equipment.
  • Performs research functions as needed; researches criminal histories and location of individuals via computer; searches driver's license files, pawnshop database, and video systems.
  • Creates/maintains positive public relations; provides education and information regarding laws, law enforcement, crime prevention, drug abuse, and related issues.
  • Maintains records, logs, and files of work activities; maintains current manuals, policies/procedures, bulletins, map books, and other materials for reference and/or review.
  • Prepares or completes various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, checklists, incident reports, supplemental reports, complaint forms, property/evidence sheets, citations, suspension notices, warrant applications, booking sheets, bail/bond forms, or other documents.
  • Receives various forms, reports, correspondence, logs, evidence sheets, witness statements, criminal history reports, warrants, subpoenas, summonses, court dockets, templates, diagrams, hit-and-run reports, toxicology reports, hospital records, laws, codes, ordinances, policies, procedures, maps, bulletins, manuals, reference materials, or other documentation; reviews, completes, processes, forwards or retains as appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively and coherently via telephone and/or two-way radio.
  • Communicates with supervisors, officers, employees, other departments, dispatchers, law enforcement agencies, fire personnel, emergency/medical personnel, court officials, attorneys, victims, complainants, prisoners, suspects, the media, the public, outside agencies, and other individuals as needed to obtain information, coordinate activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
  • Attends shift meetings, training sessions and seminars as required to remain knowledgeable of departmental operations, to promote improved job performance, and to stay current with changing policies, procedures, codes, and criminal/civil case law; reads professional literature; maintains professional affiliations.
  • Operates a variety of standard and specialized machinery, equipment, and tools associated with law enforcement.
  • Operates a personal computer, general office equipment or other equipment as necessary.
  • Performs routine foot and/or vehicle patrol at special events such as sporting events, festivals, fairs, parades, or other scheduled events of limited duration, or emergency or critical incidents. Such assignments include, but are not limited to, directing traffic at a fixed point, directing drivers to parking spaces, standing and walking posts on parade routes, standing and walking posts at pageants, fairs, festivals, entertainment shows, and other special events of limited duration.
  • Performs safety and security patrols on property owned, operated, managed, or maintained by the Myrtle Beach Police Department or the City of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. 
  • May make custodial arrests for crimes that occur in in the officer’s presence, but only while engaged in their primary duties listed above. 

ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS

  • Performs other related duties as assigned, requested and required.

Education and Experience:

Requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and must be enrolled in an applicable undergraduate or graduate degree program from an accredited college or university majoring in a criminal justice, criminology, or related field. 


Licenses or Certifications:

Must possess and maintain a valid South Carolina driver’s license. 

Must be eligible to obtain and maintain the following certifications: South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy Class III Law Enforcement Officer Certification. Must be qualified to operate a firearm. May be required to attain and maintain other certifications as related to assignment.


Special Requirements: 

Must be at least 21 years of age. Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Physical Ability: Tasks require the ability to exert moderate, though not constant physical effort, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and crawling, and which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (12-20pounds).


Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require the ability to perceive and discriminate colors or shades of colors, sounds, taste, odor, depth, texture, and visual cues or signals. Some tasks require the ability to communicate orally.


Environmental Factors: Performance of essential functions may require exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, smoke, temperature and noise extremes, traffic hazards, bright/dim lights, firearms, water hazards, violence, or rude/irate customers.
