Basic Purpose of the Job:
Under general direction from the Streets and Stormwater Superintendent and Streets Division Supervisors, performs advanced installation, maintenance, fabrication, inspection, documentation, and replacement of public right-of-way traffic signs, regulatory signs, warning signs, street name signs, construction signs, posts, supports, banners, pavement marking support items, and related traffic control devices. Performs specialized work related to temporary traffic control planning, field setup, work zone safety, traffic control device inventory, sign asset management, and compliance with applicable standards including the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.Essential Functions:

  • Install, inspect, maintain, repair, replace, and document traffic signs and related traffic control devices within the public right-of-way in accordance with applicable MUTCD standards, City standards, and accepted traffic control practices.
  • Promote and maintain safe work practices during sign installation, traffic control setup, work zone operations, equipment use, and right-of-way activities in accordance with City policies, applicable safety standards, MUTCD guidance, and accepted field practices.
  • Operate and maintain the City equipment, sign shop and fabricate traffic signs and related sign products using approved materials, equipment, and methods to support consistency, visibility, durability, and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain traffic sign, traffic control, pavement marking support, and related asset inventories and records in the City’s work management system.
  • Respond to citizen requests, field concerns, work orders, damage reports, missing or damaged traffic control devices, visibility concerns, and emergency repair needs in a timely, professional, and well-documented manner.
  • Install, inspect, adjust, maintain, and support field implementation of temporary traffic control devices and traffic control plans for City maintenance work, construction zones, special events, emergency response, detours, closures, and other right-of-way activities.
  • Coordinate traffic control needs with Streets crews, Engineering staff, contractors, event organizers, emergency responders, and other City departments.
  • Perform manual labor, equipment operation, snow and ice control support, special projects, and related Streets Division or Public Works maintenance activities as assigned.
  • Operate and maintain assigned vehicles, equipment, tools, sign shop equipment, and traffic control devices. Perform required inspections and keep equipment clean and in good working condition.
  • Serve as an on-site technical resource for sign maintenance, traffic control setup, documentation, and work zone safety practices. Provide guidance to City staff and interact with the public in a courteous, respectful, and professional manner.
  • Assist and participate in performing tasks within other City Departments as needed or assigned.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); supplemented by specialized training in public works maintenance, traffic control, sign installation, sign fabrication, transportation safety, or related field.
  • One (1) year of responsible experience performing comparable public works, street maintenance, sign maintenance, traffic control, construction, equipment operation, or right-of-way maintenance activities applicable to the essential functions of the position.
  • This position is subject to non-standard working hours including nights, weekends, holidays, emergency callouts, snow operations, special events, and after-hours traffic control needs.
  • Knowledge of standard construction and maintenance practices relating to public streets, rights-of-way, traffic control, signs, pedestrian facilities, transportation safety, and work zone operations.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply basic plans, work orders, sign layouts, traffic control plans, MUTCD guidance, City standards, and field instructions.
Licensures & Certificates (must be active and current.)
  • Current Colorado Driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Current Colorado Class B Commercial Driver’s License preferred; must be able to obtain within the timeframe established by the Department if required for assigned duties.  
Employees in this position are required to earn and maintain at least three of the following credentials. Must be able to obtain within the timeframe established by the Department if required for assigned duties:
  • Traffic Control Flagger Certification.
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician Certification or City-approved equivalent.
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor Certification or City-approved equivalent.
  • IMSA Work Zone Temporary Traffic Control Technician Certification or City-approved equivalent.  
  • IMSA Signs & Pavement Markings Technician I Certification.
  • IMSA Signs & Pavement Markings Technician II Certification.
  • 3M traffic sign fabrication, reflective sheeting, matched component system, or digital traffic sign manufacturing training, when available and applicable to City sign shop operations.
  • HP Latex printer operations, maintenance, and sign production training or City-approved manufacturer/vendor training.  
  • CLTAP Roads Scholar I.
  • CLTAP Roads Scholar II.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Requires ability to perform heavy manual labor. Strenuous physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 50 pounds; frequent lifting, carrying, walking and standing, hand/eye coordination. The employee frequently is required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Frequent hand/eye coordination for operation of personal computer, and use of hands to handle small parts; vision for reading and preparing written reports and documents; frequent speech communication, hearing and listening to maintain communications with employees and citizens. Requires driving and walking during inclement weather. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles; extreme cold and extreme heat; chemicals. The employee is occasionally exposed to vibration. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.Late applications will not be accepted.
